However, greed soon stirs within him, leading to a contentious decision to withhold the winnings from his companions to fund their jousting aspirations. Despite initial resistance, Roland and Wat eventually join William in his quest, and they invest diligently in training and new equipment, setting their sights on the next tournament.
During their travels, the trio encounters a naked Geoffrey Chaucer, who claims to have been robbed. In a twist of fate, he offers his skills to forge a patent of nobility for William if they assist him with food and clothing. Skeptical yet in need, the squires agree, although Wat keeps a wary eye on Geoffrey’s intentions.
