Penelope grows up lonely and trapped within the confines of her home, subjected to her mother's paranoid efforts to shield her from the world. Their days are filled with meetings set up by a matchmaker, where suitors are presented to Penelope through a one-way mirror. Unfortunately, as each suitor glimpses her pig-like face, they flee in terror, leaving Penelope devastated. Only one brave suitor, Edward, expresses understanding by revealing his own feelings of entrapment—however, he is also frightened into running away when he finally sees Penelope.
