I am deviating a bit from my normal posts as of late to bring attention to an AWESOME post by my friend @just2random.

He has basically sleuthed the initial reason as to why Steemit has been declining in visitors/interest/value and it doesn't correlate with the Bitcoin drop!
Basically, he found that right around the time Steem started to really drop off, Google also released a new SEO algorithm which prioritizes trustworthy and interesting content. This would infer that Steemit is not very trustworthy with kind of subpar content which is why, as he explains, Steemit was "punished".
Listen, I'm with anyone who wants to improve on Steemit's content. Our trending page is a dumpster fire, and don't even get me started on how I feel about bots and shitposting and the like. It's out of control and the powers that be are doing very little to stop it.
That being said....
There is a lot of informative, fabulous content on Steemit as well. It is a plethora of information about the blockchain, cryptocurrency, bitcoin, Steemit itself and anything else tech-related you can imagine.
What it also contains a lot of is forlorn and frustrated YouTube ex's that have written/video'd scathing commentary about YouTube and its controversial and controlling policies.
The beginning of 2018 was also a time when a few BIG YouTube names were fresh on the Steemit scene and ready to throw YouTube under the bus.
Let's see now...who owns YouTube again? Oh yeah...GOOGLE.
Some of the best content on Steemit is also written by Libertarian authors who can see right through Google's "fair" policies and have criticized them in full, proudly and openly on Steemit.
It wouldn't exactly be in Google's best interest to prioritize content written by authors that criticize their very company, or promote a website that allows people to leave one of their cherished websites by the thousands in order to come to a freer, better place where they can still earn money.
Why is this so important?
Well, not only has this helped keep the price of Steem in the toilet, but it has also slowed Steemit's growth to a crawl, and could continue to do so in the future.
More importantly though, people trust the internet. They have turned to the internet because they can no longer trust the MSM, newspapers, magazines or the radio. The internet has freed many minds, and continues to be a place where people gather their opinions and information. This kind of politicized SEO is poison to democracy and freedom and something we should be VERY leery of.

You hit the nail on the head Beth.
SEO = What Google likes to see.
You can optimize your content to get higher search result rankings, verify your "property" on their Google Search Console Dashboard and backlinks from websites that Google doesn't like don't count at all.
Futhermore you have Google earth, Google maps, the search engine itself and Youtube.
Google controls the world and that is no understatement. They control information access and what we see, smartphones, computers, navigation systems and more.
Shit, ever seen Terminator? Google could easily become Skynet, they already have global control.
It's about politics, and politics are about power, this is just another way of securing and increasing Googles might.
Nice garden, and by the way, I remember that @teutonium said that Google has a team to research immortality, guess Soros has a special interest LOL.

Some of the best content creators have left because of lack of visibility (within the platform) and the the ability of Whales to flag an account to death. I'm thoroughly disgusted with the likes of Bernadette Flagalicious, also known as the Flagit Fagit, who can re-establish his rePUTAtion after having sunk to -17. Who did he bribe? Why worry about Google when this platform can't assure fair viewer-ship to it's participants within the platform? Why would we want to be here? Why would I post here if I can't even watch my own videos a month later? These are issues I brought up from the very beginning! I work 10 hours to create a video, and the platform feeds me shit in return!! Easy to blame Google, but Steemit needs to get their own shit together rather than rely on an outside entity to spread it's visibility. Viewer-ship and reader-ship came from 1 million new accounts, ..of which maybe 150,000 are still active. We've lost more viewers than we have active accounts; perhaps that is the real reason our ratings dropped through the floor. Greetings!
I agree with everything that you say Onno, there are a lot of factors that play a role for Steem crashing at the moment.

Wow! I thought traffic seemed down a lot. The price has been low before. Hopefully the Steem Blockchain can eventually crush Google and Youtube.

Aren't pretty much all stock market companies controlled by big money, I wonder. The moves from Google/YouTube to demonetize users are happening on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as well. Now the Bilderberg conference had one of their topics "fake news" and we see the grip around alternative media trying to stop what is already unstoppable. The Steem blockchain is our save haven from which we can not just continue our work but make it much better. The next years will be a fight for our liberty and freedom as more and more people break out of the matrix.

Just today I realized that Google disabled the email I use for my blog because it "violated Google's policy" for having the words "redpill" in it. It's utter insanity.
This is very disturbing to say the least. Check out https://protonmail.com/. It is a secure and free email service with end-to-end encryption and total anonymity. Based on open source but sadly not blockchain technology. If you find some point me in the direction, please.
I've noticed this exact thing too... I deliberately wrote a 'Beginner's Guide to Ninja Warrior' to replace the terrible 10 year old articles on the first page of Google... and despite it being up to date, amazing and has all the right keywords (ie, the exact things that Google says it's looking for) it doesn't even appear in the first 10 pages of Google, even though way worse articles do.
Steemit is very much being punished by Google... my article appears right at the top of Bing and DuckDuckGo... and soon Presearch will be right there hopefully correcting some wrongs.

Well done... very nice video. We all should rise our voice against censorship and bullyness by google and youtube. Presenting our views and thoughts infront of world is our fundamental right so lets get together and fight for our freedome of expression. Well done.

@bethwheatcraft I totally believe that! YouTube (owned by GOOGLE) also shadow bans people. You can post your content BUT no one will ever see it.If you views are liberal YOU ARE GOOD! Anything else FORGET IT! It is over for you. That is the truth. GREAT POST BETH!

I don't think we will be free though until we break away from huge conglomerates that are in bed with the government like Google now is. The internet should be free.

Good piece there Beth, as usual. Google are just another dictator group that doesn't really care much for real freedom of many kinds. Where are the sharp minds these days to come up with a real and clever alternative to google?
Well said pete .... a good and strong platform needed to stand firmly infront of google and youtube. I think steemit will definatelly provide this platform.
Yes Steemit is a great alternative to most of what the internet has to offer. If even just some of Google's profits feel a hit from the people leaving YouTube, it could make a difference. We will have to see.

Yeah its a crazy situation we find ourselves in. My business success can greatly be attributed to Google & Youtube but I am here on Steemit on my personal capacity and Im in love with it. It saddens me the recent news of censorship coming from google and youtube but it is what it is. We just need to keep faith here and keep creating , keep sharing and with time it will hit a tipping point. For now your in a situation where you can gain ground here on the Steem platforms. It will take off it is only a matter of time.
That's why I link my steemit articles myself. I try hard to do work arounds to the Googlematrix censorship.
