How you can learn drifting your NORMAL STREET LEGAL CAR easily, safely and perfectly.
I love cars and love drifting, who don’t like drift I mean almost every driver love drifting it looks cool and have lot of fun just imagine a long side way slide....smoke of burning tire, the vibration of engine, the smell of tire, sound of car engine roaring like a beast.....the feeling can’t be described in words.
In movies and videos you have seen people drifting but generally it’s a modified or a race car so here I am going to describe how you can safely drift with any little powered road car, this is basically for beginners I am sharing my knowledge and experience here to help you all, so I am describing how to drift a rear wheel drive car with manual gearbox and no traction or stability control.
FIRST OF ALL CHOOSE A RIGHT PLACE:
First of all drifting is illegal, so don’t do it on streets or any other general places since you’re learning so choose an empty track or a place which don’t penalize you for damage or anything wrong happen your drift goes wrong no one else got hurt, you can go off track many times so don’t choose a hilly track.
FOR ROAD CARS YOU NEED TO BE REALLY AGGRESSIVE WITH YOUR THROTTLE AND STEERING INPUTS.
BEFORE START DRIFTING PRACTICE THIS:
Set a cone or some reference on a safe wide track then try to come up to it then press clutch and rip the hand brake and flick the steering a little hard then you see car turns a sideways then keep the front tires forward to the circular try to rotate the car 180 degrees around it, practice this until you do exact same not less not more.
At the time of ripping hand brake be sure to keep the car speed 30-40 mph (48-64 km/h) and try to control the car until it stops. Try to do a 360 degrees cone too.
Mainly drifting has four parts:
• Starting the drift
• Maintaining the drift
• Transitioning the drift
• Exiting the drift
STARTING A DRIFT AND MAINTAINING:
Starting a drift is quite easy as compared to other three, approach to the turn then use little brake as we using a normal car instead of a sports or modified car so it’s difficult to turn it that’s why we have to shift some weight to shift front tires.
By little braking before drift the as car trying to lower its speed then due to momentum front of the car is pushed down thus this will also increase the grip on front tires and some decrease in grip from rear tires.
So when you’re at the corner push little brake and flick steering hard push the accelerator little and try to make it rotate if car don’t rotate properly don’t worry just rotate steering bake to the track slowly and push little accelerator you see the car is at perfect drifting angle.
MAINTAINING THE DRIFT:
This is the most fun and exciting part in drifting, but it’s the most difficult part too. Going from one corner to the other while drifting it the lot tricky part requires lot of practice if you throttle too hard t e car will spin and if too soft then the car will come straight on track just be aware of the mistakes every time and try to correct them.
So use throttle to increase or decrease the angle, less throttle will reduce the angle and move car toward the centre and more throttle will increase the angle and also move the car away from the centre.
CLUTCH KICK TECHNIQUE
While drifting if you feel that you loosing power/angle then kick the clutch pedal in and out a few times end by releasing the clutch pedal and continue drifting and when you feel loosing again use clutch kick again.
EXITING THE DRIFT:
For exiting the drift just lower the throttle and wait for the perfect moment when you feel the rear tire is getting grip gently start lowering the steering angle and your car comes back to straight path remember to lower the throttle and gently lower the angle of steering.
THERE ARE MANY WAYS OF DRIFTING. You can also use handbrake to turn the car to slight angle on the corner.
WARNING
- Don’t drift on public roads its illegal.
- Always drift the car under the speed in which you can control if you trying it for the first time keep it below 40 mph (64 km/h), use breaks when needed.
- Don’t over speed if your car spins it requires lot of experience and skills to recover.
- If you’re doing drift on any SUV or pickup take full caution and only do it if you’re very experienced because these type of vehicle can roll.
- Don’t use FWD and AWD in strict manners instead of drifting they simply drag their tires sideways.

Very good post! Why is drifting so cool?
Thank you
Drifting is used by professional racers to sweep around corners without much lowering thier speed, but for us we do this only for fun...
Just imagine long side way slides in the turns with loads of smoke, and the sound of roaring engine... Can express the feeling man, you have to be on driver seat to feel it...😎

I can honestly say I never drifted on purpose. The only time I ever found myself in this type of vehicle control situation was when we had snow or ice on the roadway.
but of course, my husband was intrigued with your post! Must be a guy thing! lol
Great explanation of how to do drifting safely
