Europe’s First Underwater Restaurant Would Also Be A Boon For Marine Life

Dining underwater sounds like a wonderful experience—and Norwegian design company Snohetta wants to build a restaurant that would offer just that.

Set to be the first underwater restaurant in Europe, the restaurant has been named ‘Under’, which also means “wonder” in Norwegian. Not only would Under be a dining destination for adventurous foodies, it is also designed to be an ecological haven for marine life.

The concrete building would have rough surfaces that are easy for mussels to cling on to—over time, an artificial mussel reef would develop, which would serve to purify the waters and attract marine life to this clean part of the sea.

The restaurant would team up with research teams to conduct studies on marine biology and biodiversity—it would also educate the public about the importance of these subjects.
