For many of us human beings, there seems to be a need to avoid silence in the presence of other humans. This seems to be especially true with folks we've just met or don't know very well. Why is this? Could it be that silence allows for uncomfortable feelings, mostly repressed, to come to the surface?
If we all have uncomfortable feelings, then why do we avoid them? I've come to see that I hold the belief that I am bad for having them. Thus, I try to push them away. Pushing away a part of me, a part of life. How fucking violent is that? Let's say that an unwanted emotion arises, let's go for sadness, and let's compare it to a sad child that wants to come inside the house, and the parent doesn't allow the child inside because he or she is sad, once again. And so the child stays outside, alone. That, I find, hurts really bad.
And so, everyday, we say no to our emotions, to our children, because they are unwanted. Remember how it feels to be an unwanted child? We've all experienced this, on some level, right? Why is it, now that we have the power/maturity to welcome ourselves fully into existence, that we keep saying «go away!» to the unwanted parts that arise? This has to be examined for us to experience true freedom and stop trying to control our wild spirit. Maybe an open heart can go a long way. Even if it's scary.
