A Gender Distribution Question
Asking touchy questions on twitter
I came across this clip of Jordan Peterson explaining the gender differences amongst men and women in the field of Engineering. According to him, if 9 out of 10 engineers are men, if 1 out of 10 engineers are women, and with gendered hiring quotas installed in place...then the pool of incompetent women hired for the job will mathematically be higher than the pool of incompetent men hired. If a company has a pool of 90,000 men and 10,000 women to select for a specific job, there is a greater chance of locating and hiring competency within males than females. It all makes sense if you think in pareto distributions and bell curve graphs I suppose.
The question I asked was merely, was the opposite true? If, given a career that is dominated by women, infrequently chosen by men, would you find a greater degree of competent women in the selection process?
Honest, the question was a genuine one, not meant to stir up derision and vitriol. While a few replies were blunt and short saying the answer was obvious, I would generally say the answers I got on twitter were about 50% yes to 50% no.
Some of my favorite questions are those without clear answers.
I love asking questions which net a wide range of answers. It really shows how different people with different mindsets can have an array of ways of thinking about the world and the current topics within it.
I intentionally didn't add any of my bias into my question because I honesty:
- A: Don't know
- B: Haven't given it a lot of thought.
