Beware of Flax! It's not the "healthy" super food you think it is!

in #life8 years ago (edited)

Hello everyone! I must say that reading this article today really shocked me as I thought flax was a "healthy" protein to add to my keto lifestyle. A wonderful instagrammer that I follow posted an article about how flax is very hard to digest and causes bad estrogen to develop. She mentions that flax was originally used to make rope and linen and that the oil extracted from the seed was meant for paint and varnishes! As for myself, I will never consume flax again. Unbelievable!

My source is from the following article by Maria Emmerich (Keto Adapted)

Very interesting Anna,
I can see where the food manufacturers would pervert the original use of this to try and advertise Flax as a low carb alternative, but not necessarily compatible to the human gut!

All seeds are difficult to digest. That's why you need to soak them briefly before you use them

Yes, I'm familiar with this. The fact that flax is not good for causing bad estrogen in women concerns me. Thank you for your reply, however!

I just think that these studies are so mixed and not many people know how it works. For example here is an article that says flax might have a protective effect on cancer (http://blog.aicr.org/2017/06/06/healthtalk-flaxseed-and-breast-cancer/) It's like anyone can have a blog now, put up some study and say things are "good" or "bad". When really things are much more complicated. I'm certainly not "picking on" your article - but all of these "health blogs" are typically recycled information that is taken out of context. What was the dose? For how long? Was this a study? Was it a double-blind? What was the hypothesis? etc.

However, I DO appreciate you bringing awareness to health concerns. The more people are aware, typically the better they eat.
