When I am not volunteering with the Young Muslim Collective and selling clothing at GAP, I find time to be a part-time teacher at Sankofa Underground North Academy (aka S.U.N Academy) of Minneapolis
S.U.N. Academy was designed to eradicate the disparities between students of color and their white peers through giving students of African descent a running chance with a school of their own.
We mainly focus on teaching African culture, African art, Music and African history, along with the usual math, science and English.
I want these children to learn the truth about their race before slavery, how we once were Kings and Queens, and how that royal blood still runs through our veins. I want these children to believe they can do anything, and reach their dreams.
Most of these kids came to this country as a refugee, I feel a connection with these children, as I have seen the same struggles and hardships as they have. They need an adult who they can relate to and who understands their past. Many of these kids need somebody who will take the time to listen to their thoughts and have the patience to teach them.
These kids would not have the same opportunity in a majority white school in this city, they would not have a caring and nurturing environment, because they would not have teachers who they would be able to relate to them, They would always feel out of place, like a black spot on a white canvas.
As always every cent this account makes from Steemit will be donated to the Young Muslim Collective.
Nice :)
God bless this gentle giant
