We are at an age where conventional education doesn't exactly provide the skills necessary to succeed in today's changing world.
Apart from the basics of learning to read, write and numbers calculations.Most of the subjects taught in schools today are no longer taught or have become impractical in the real world.
These are my top ten things I believe should be taught by parents ,guardians or at least somehow incorporated into the school Curriculum.
1.Nature Nurture
Getting children to see how nature affects our lives and making them understand the consequences inherent in abusing and not protecting our environment also enjoining them to participate in various nature-inspired projects like planting of trees , recycling of waste products,campaigns to protect endangered plants and animals,global warming .
2.Comprehension over Memorization
The school system looks favorably upon students who can memorize long strings of words often without fully understanding the concepts behind them and how it applies to them and their surroundings.This method of teaching usually doesn't encourage the students to think outside the box.
3.Use of Analog tools and utilities
Simple things like learning how to read a map with a compass, how to read the minutes,hours and seconds hand of an analog clock, how to start a 🔥fire for warmth outdoors have all been replaced by more refined digital devices ,manual transmission for automatic transmission cars.Having a working knowledge of devices and use of any and all tools like these could prove useful in tight situations .
4.Lost Art of having one on one Conversations
Most relationships fail before they even begin because like the youths of this generation they don't know the art of initiating, carrying or proper way to end a conversation,sadly the only way they know to converse or communicate with people is over the internet.These presents a host of problems because ignoring valuable skills like these makes them asocial in real life interactions and negatively affect work place relationships,how to approach and act appropriately around the opposite sex, creating and maintaining a valuable network of friends and colleagues as well as development of apathy towards people which can't be learned behind the keyboard.
5.Internet-preneurs
Gone are the days when a large majority of children had aspirations of becoming doctors,engineers,lawyers,bankers and all the other top professions of the world that until recently had many students courting the various institutions for apprenticeship. Nowadays parents encourage their children to explore their hidden talents
In today's changing world.Children are becoming overnight YouTube sensations,musicians,bloggers,social influencers,affilliate marketers,copywriters, movie stars ,competitive athletes .Some going on to be millionaires before they even turn twenty.
6.Money Management skills.
Children should at a certain age be encouraged to open a bank account and taught to save,invest and maintain a healthy bank balance.This will help fast track their road to independence for the young adult as well as furnish him/her with valuable skills to increase his/her financial holdings.
7.Cooking
Due in large part to the heavy workloads and irregular work hours of the parents.Parents order in food from fast-food restaurants denying their children the opportunity to learn first hand knowledge on how to make the various delicious home cooked meals from priceless traditional food recipes passed down from generation to generation.
8.Right Programming.
It's important as parents to create time no matter how busy we are to impress upon our children valuable life lessons and to protect their young impressionable minds from corruptible inappropriate contents that is so readily available on the internet or on Satellite televisions by making sure to place parental restrictions on them while make sure they have access to quality programs that will develop their minds positively .It's sad to note that most of the home training most children receives comes from adult rated programmes.
9.Self defense
Self defense techniques along with self restraint should only be employed when diplomatic ways of resolving a hairy situation have failed or when there is a clear and present threat to self. Knowing just the right amount of adequate of force to employ in disabling and not terminate an opponent is important .
10.Cultivating the habit of reading great educative and entertaining Fictional or non-fictional literature.
Best way to develop the mind is to view the mind as a prime piece of real estate.And the knowledge you gain from them as materials to build up awe inspiring structures and monuments.Remember that knowledge is power and power attracts wealth.
11.Learning Languages
Childhood is the best time for learning of multiple languages. It is a valuable asset to have especially when travelling in the future whether for business,pleasure or studies to areas where the language is conversed in.
