I had a golden once, yes, even with my allergies, I fought thru it for awhile as long as I could.

Mine was a purebred but of the side of the breed where the coat almost is like that of a Red Setter.
I found her a good home way out on a farm with dog people when I had to give her up, -- best place for her. I was 18 working in real estate living in a big 2 BR apartment, and not able to be home as much as she needed.
She told me so by always chewing my fg shoes LOL
They have big personalities and are generally good communicators. Sounds like you had an over-achiever. Lol! So glad she ended up in a fitting situation, but dang, allergies suck.
