I host tourists through Airbnb and often hear bad stories about couchsurfing I'm sad to report. I'm sure most of it is good and safe, but the bad eggs involved have turned a lot of young women especially but also some guys against it.
I'm probably only hearing the bad stories though because the people I'm meeting have turned to Airbnb.
I must see Hawaii some day. Your pictures are beautiful.
Thanks! Yeah I could imagine that with Courchsurfing there are guys who try to use it almost like a dating situation where a hot female traveler is coming to their place and it could make people feel uncomfortable. I had amazing experiences with it though.
Yeah a lot more than uncomfortable when you arrive in a city you don't know with nowhere else to stay and you find yourself faced with either soliciting sex or walking the streets alone to find somewhere else.
I've even met somebody who admitted to doing this himself. Like it was funny...
Good to hear about your experience. I'm sure most of it is good, as most people are. The baduns just stand out. It looks like you had a great time, those waves look insane!!
I could see how the lines could get blurred as well. Let's just pretend this situation. Let's say a guy hosts a girl and she is attractive. They start having some drinks or just hanging out and talking. There seems to be an attraction. What do you do ?
Don't say anything and kick yourself or complement her on how good she looks?
I have never been in this situation because in all the couch surfing situations I was with a girlfriend and she was involved in the experience. But I could see how these situations could come up.
Yeah that's innocent enough though... I'm talking about a number of guys who actually pretended to have spare beds to sleep on, and when the guest arrived they were told "this is my bed... I sleep here too... This is how it is."
That's scary. A misunderstanding through flirting is just commonplace it happens all the time. But I met a guy once who actually told me he had a profile on couchsurfing but he doesn't have a spare bed or couch and when I asked did his profile say that he laughed and said that would defeat the purpose... It seemed because his friends laughed him up on this, he saw nothing wrong with it.
I'm just replying here to your lower comment about the dude that didn't have a spare bed or couch!!!! That is fucked up! What a savage! I'm surprised he didn't get flagged and reported on Couch Surfing for that or that people would leave a ton of bad comments.
I don't think the guy I spoke to had had any guests yet. But more than one girl who came to me as a guest told me of similar stories where they or a friend of theirs got to the house and were expected to share a bed. I've never used it myself but I imagine they were flagged and either set up a new account or only tried it the once. Who knows. But yes, a scary situation to find yourself in.
