How I Fell in Love with a Frenchman

I had spent months searching thru photos, one after the other, pining for the one I knew was out there waiting for me. I knew when I saw him I would know… and then the day before my 29th birthday I found him! He was perfect: big brown eyes, sweet expression, the most unique face I had ever seen… he was the frenchman I would fall in love with.

I quickly arranged to meet him and drove an hour in a half north of the city to a lovely country town. My heart pounded as I drove the winding rural roads, till finally I saw a little white house sitting at the end of a gravel driveway. As I parked and started to get out of the car, smiling at the sweet looking lady waiting on the porch for me, I saw something move in the grass. It was like so many of the slow motion romance movies moments that came before. There he was, running at full speed, eye intensely locked on me, leaping high and gaining speed as he approached. But just as he reached my feet he flopped! Landing straight on his back and looking up at me barely able to see over his upside-down hanging cheeks. Love at first sight was a overly used cliche till this very moment.

Our story is one as old as time, well more approximately 15,000- 30,000 years old when dogs were first domesticated. It is interesting however to note that the majority of dog breeds were produced in the 19th century during a “Victorian dog breeding frenzy”. The french bulldog was one of the breeds that came from this sudden burst of Victorian canine creativity. Bulldogs were descendants of dogs belonging to an ancient Greek tribe, the Molossians. A subfamily of the English Molossian descendants, Bullenbeisser (bulldogs), were then breed with terriers and pugs. Lace makers took to these sweet lapdogs and when many were displaced from England to France due to the Industrial Revolution they brought their flat faced friends with them. They became all the rage in France and received the name “Bouledogue Francais”. They became popular and quite fashionable with ladies at all positions in society, ranging from the ladies of high society to ladies of the night. The French bulldog with it’s great companionship skills and unique appearance became popular and loved by many from the creative community as well such as artists, writers, and designers.

It’s been a little over three years and I still retell him the story of that day. He prefers however I not tell people how I carried him around for months after that and how he slept with his head on the edge of my pillow, as he is a big boy now and values his tough man reputation. One of his biggest accomplishment was learning to jump, as he frequently does on a nightly basis into the master bedroom garden tub with pride and an impressive agility. He loves snacks and playing with his big sister and is a much bigger snuggle bunny than he would ever admit. Introducing Sir Teddi Bruschi - the Frenchman I fell in love with.
