Despite the fact that we have almost always been told that "To make mistakes is for humans", because we are not perfect. There are some other professions where we challenge this statement and assume full responsibility for what can happen if we get "wrong"; All for the passion and love that we have to do what we like.
In this post I bring you some of the most dangerous work in the world presented by The British newspaper The Independent in 2016 and we will also go a little deeper into the profession in which I am forming, as it is part of this list.
Below is the list numbered from 15 to 1, where 15 represents the least dangerous and 1 the highest.
15- Repairing of refractory material
14- Collector of recyclable material
13- Technicians in operation
12- Preparers of medical equipment
11- Pilots of airlines, co-pilots and flight engineers
10- Operators in refinery equipment
9- Assistants of medical surgeons, medical technologists
8- Boiler Operators
7- Operators in a water treatment plant
6- Histotechnologists
5- Immigration inspectors
4- Podiatrists
3- Anesthetists
2- Flight attendants
1- Dentists
As you have seen, in the eleventh place is the profession of pilot. This is the profession in which I am graduating
In recent days, several friends have asked me the same question "Benjamin, is it true that the captain dies with his aircraft?" This question has led me to explain why in this race do not allow mistakes and in turn is dangerous.
First of all, I want you to take into account what the Danger is and what the Risk is.
According to the real Spanish academy El Peligro is: "Risk or imminent contingency that some evil happens."
And The Risk: "Contingency or proximity of a damage"
In other words, the danger would be a latent condition that can be the cause of some damage, which is waiting to be detonated and the risk would be the possibility that that latent condition is activated and causes damage.
In turn it is important to clarify that there is a noticeable difference between what is an incident and an accident, when an incident occurs there is no loss of life while in an accident itself.
Now there are three main points that make this race dangerous.
The first is that as pilots of an aircraft defy nature is a fact, so we have a lot of latent conditions waiting for the minimum error. Just putting a suitcase where it should not be, can unbalance the airplane at the time of takeoff and thus cause a serious accident.
Something as simple as an insect obstructing the static pitot tube would cause an erroneous reading of some instruments that if not proceeded in the right way would cause an incident or even worse an accident if it comes to take human lives.
For the second point I would like to remember the first few days of training at my school where one of the things they told us was that this was not a game and that mistakes were not allowed. If you make a mistake, it is likely that you will not live to tell it. If you live to tell, you are privileged. Because even though airplane accidents are few, when they occur they are catastrophic.
The third important point is that assuming that an incident occurs, the protocol would be that the captain together with the crew should assist the passengers to dislodge the aircraft, then evict the flight attendants and finally the captain and so on any incident or accident. If the master does not comply with this procedure will be sanctioned by law and put in prison.
In response to the initial question, let's just say yes ... most of the time. Being the captain means that just as you have the power to decide what happens on your aircraft also everything that happens in it is your responsibility. If someone went through the mind to get on the plane narcotics and psychotropic substances and the captain does not realize, but it turns out that they discover the person, the captain is responsible and therefore also sanctioned. As I mentioned in the third point, the captain is the last one to leave since he is responsible for all the plane and the lives that go on board.
These are the main reasons which if you are a pilot, make mistakes is not an option!
If you were already thinking "I'll never ride on a plane!" Well here it is not over, with all this I do not say that the plane is not safe. Airplanes are safest in this world! It is much more likely to die in a car accident than in a plane and many travel by car on a daily basis, but what makes the planes safer, if there are so many dangers waiting for the right time? ... In the next post I will be Thankful to explain them!
To be continued…
