This is a series about breaking down and applying short ideas / quotes found online, in books, Twitter, wherever.
"A fit body, a calm mind, a home full of love - these things cannot be bought, only earned." ~ Naval Ravikant
This quote should be plastered across all the offices of high performers.
It's a great reminder that although we think that money solves most of our problems - it doesn't really solve these.
They can facilitate it, but not buy it.
A fit body
Yes, you may say that buying a gym membership / personal trainer allows you to get a fit body.
You can pay for the facilities and even accountability, but ultimately you have to put in the work to do it.
You can't pay someone else to workout for you.
Warren Buffett always uses this analogy -
"Imagine if a magic genie appeared before you when you are 18 and asked you to pick any car you want, the model, the colour, everything.
But with one catch - it's the only car you can ever have in your lifetime."
Knowing it's the only car you can ever have, you would take good care of it. And not resell it 5 years later.
This is exactly to how we view our bodies. We are only given one brain and one body - so you want to make sure it lasts for the next 80+ years.
Author Mark Manson gave an example of visiting a cancer ward and asking patients:
"Would you rather a billion dollars now, or for your cancer to cured instantly?"
Which do you think they would choose?
To put it directly: "You can't accomplish anything if you're dead."
A calm mind
I'm a big worrier.
I worry when I don't finish the most important tasks of the day.
I worry that I would get fired if my work doesn't return an immediate ROI.
I worry that at my current trajectory that I won't be able to reach my goals.
It takes discipline and little wisdom to remain calm regardless of what life throws at you.
A good question to ask yourself:
"Is what you are concerned about within your circle of control (i.e. can you do something about it)?"
If so, do something about it. If you're not gonna do something about it, then worry about it when the time is needed.
A great book on the topic is Dale Carnegie's How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.
A house full of love
Oooh, we are getting to touchy territory here.
We all heard of the countless stories of highly-paid high-flying parents who give only the best to their children - except their time.
I've heard too many stories in my immediate circle to know that a loving family doesn't come automatically. It takes work and effort to foster such an environment.
Feeding your kids and clothing them does not automagically make them want to spend time with you / see you as their role model.
Creating a home (not a house) is more difficult than the first two because there is no manual out there that teaches you this stuff. Only you know and only you can discover what your spouse and kids really want from you.
You gotta earn it, can't buy it.

Yo Ben, why this new series?
There's something magical about quotes and short tweets. It exemplies that writing doesn't have to 3,000 words long to be profound.
The best advice I got for writing is that whatever advice you dispell has be memorable and actionable.
Memorable = very easy to remember (usually something short)
Actionable = something people can put into practice (action reinforces the quote even more)
What's one of your favourite quotes? Let me know in the comments and it will be in the next post!
This is my current favourite and it is becoming increasingly true for me, as the more connected I am to my authentic self, the more I can genuinely contribute back to the world.
Glad to see you are back to blogging on Steemit @bensimblog. You've got the gift of writing. It's time to share your gift with the world and let it shine :)
You are too kind Karinz! :)
You're a super giving soul too. Looking forward to make the world more curious and wisdom go viral :D
