How to Find Your Purpose

For the longest time, teenagers and college grads are pushed with this impossible question. Looking to figures like Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates as people who found their calling early in life - computers.

Surely there must have been tactics and techniques to identify your purpose on this earth. One of the most common ones are:

  • finding out what you wanted to be when you were 14, 15, 16
  • finding out what you are naturally drawn to (your inclinations)

The only way to figure out this is to try as many things possible. I, for one, found out that I enjoy solving problems as it relates to the product (product management). I was the editor of my high school yearbook and I spend an absurd amount of time editing it until I neglected my grades.

Besides asking yourself what is your passion, you should also ask another very important question:

What is the lifestyle you want to have?

If you have struggled to find your purpose, do this one instead. Think in detail what is the lifestyle you want. Here are some of mine:

  1. Working remotely. All online. 4 day work weeks. Freelance.

  2. Travel every 2 to 3 months to a different country.

  3. Go to the gym 5 days week, before work.

  4. Have house parties every 2 weeks and invite my closest friends.

  5. Live in a strategic apartment in the city.

  6. Live near cheap places to eat as well as nice places to go on dates.

  7. Learn new skills every month - Javascript, MMA, etc.

Once you draw out the life you want in detail, work backwards and find the missing pieces and build them in.
