হরলাল রায়ের কাছে শিক্ষার পাশাপাশি মধুসূদনকে পাঠানো হয় শেখপুরা গ্রামের (তত্‍কালীন শেখপুরা সাগরদাঁড়ি গ্রামের অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল) খন্দকার মখমল আহমেদ নামে কলকাতা মাদ্রাসার অবসরপ্রাপ্ত শিক্ষক একজন মৌলবী সাহেবের কাছে ফারসি শিক্ষার জন্য। ঐতিহ্যবাহী খন্দকার পরিবারের এ শিক্ষকের কাছেই ফারসি শিখতে আসতেন কপোতাক্ষ তীরের আর এক কৃতী সন্তান খুলনা-পাইকগাছার রাডুলি কাঠিপাড়ার হরিশচন্দ্র রায়, আচার্য প্রফুল্ল চন্দ্র রায়ের পিতা।
