In a world of science and logic how can religion exist, or better yet, why?

in #life7 years ago

Ah religion, where to even start.

There is 0 evidence for it.

There is 0 logic to it.

There is 0 place for it in modern day society.

So many countries have laws based off of religious values, we're meant to respect others beliefs no matter how much evidence there is against it.
If god exists why does he allow children to suffer and die of starvation. Why does he allow the rape and torture of innocent men, women and children.
If god created the heaven and the earth and everything else, why did he allow cancer, polio, AIDS, dementia the list goes on.

If we are created in gods image why did he create Hitler? or Pol Pot? or Stalin?
If we are all gods creatures and all men are equal why does he allow racism and bigotry?

There are over 4,200 active religions and yet whichever god you believe in is the one true god?
what is it that can make you blindly follow something you cannot see, hear, feel or prove.

Science has disproved so many facets of religion that to ignore it is moronic and blatantly ignorant.

If you ask god for help and he doesn't help why do you trust in him?
Why do so many people who live such shit and miserable lives believe he is their savior?

Religion is but one thing. A simple way to control the masses. A way to dictate how you behave and how you act.
It is a way for people to do horrible things and blame it on a higher power.

The ten commandments? did you really need to be told not to kill and steal from each other?

The bible? evidence showing it was written by so many different people and yet its God's word?

You have the right to your beliefs, but that does not mean your beliefs aren't stupid.

If i believe cows fly it doesn't make it true and it doesn't make my belief valid.

I don't mean to offend anyone i honestly don't but if you're religious you need to practice some critical thinking, step away from the fairy-tale and ask some questions.

The world could be a much better place if religion didn't exist

I think you're confusion government with religion. Statism is where murder comes from, not religion.

religion says dont kill people and then in almost every religious book it states to kill people for whatever reason.

Most religious truths have been appropriated by governments for all of human history. Also despising "religion" doesn't make one an atheist since no religion has a trademark or patent on "God." Most of them think they do, but they're all kind of the same.

Open mindedness is key to our survival, for our current way of life is unsustainable. We must be open to new ideas and ways of life, be it religious or otherwise! One of my favorite quotes on this matter is by Richard Dawkins, he says, "We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further."

I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world.

Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence

Religion is capable of driving people to such dangerous folly that faith seems to me to qualify as a kind of mental illness. Richard Dawkins

Im open minded so long as you can show me some sort of proof of existence. some tangible evidence.

The four mian "organised" religions i.e Christianity, Islam etc, etc, are now nothing more than very powerful political pawns used to start wars, create borders and prey on the weak. And I say this in the nicest way possible. Gone are the days where you believed in a god because you want to see a loved one again after you've both passed. What we are left with in the way of active religion is so far removed from its original sentiment that it bares only a fleeting semblance of its former, greater self. Djr420

See i like the idea of religion in the sense that it can help give peace and closure when close to death or when a loved one dies but like you say its just a tool now and in an age of high education ( at least in the developed world) it just doesnt seem logical that people still believe it.

I agree my friend, I still believe the fundamentals of most religion to be morally sound but we have to remember these are ideas from thousands of years ago. Is that what we should be basing our whole belief systems on?

I think science is doing the same.

how so?

Big bang theory of creation= In the beginning the universe was void and without form

Can you be more specific, perhaps elaborate on that thought? Cheers D

Science and religion are only at odds in the narrow space of smaller minds. Was Einstein an Atheist? Darwin? Maxwell? Newton?

When I was a child at some time a realization came to me. If God exists and he's watching over us and he created us in the first place, why aren't all people born equal? Why are many people born poor? Why do many people suffer? Why doesn't the said sadist up in the sky help people? From that time I started to
I don't mind religious people who believe in God and don't do harm to other people. The problem arises when the opposite happens. For example, some religious parents refuse medical treatment for their sick children and choose prayer instead which can have a tragic outcome.
I think humans created religion because of fear or the lack of explanation for some things that they didn't understand.
