Welcome back to age of Walkmans, Rubik's Cubes, and Pacman (or did you prefer Galaga, or perhaps the lesser known Robotron or DigDug?)! Folks, because I know you are completely unaware of this, I am here to officially inform you that TODAY, February 27th, is National Retro Day!
Wait, you're not excited? C'mon dude, the best years of your life are behind you! Today is the day to take the time to celebrate those glory days, reminisce about cruising with your clique, relive the amazing awkwardness and boundless excitement of your very own puberty and coming of age! Today (and tonight) is a perfect time to get in contact with that old high school friend or flame and just let them know you were thinking about them. Ah, and even better, make your kids sit down with you and watch a few things on Youtube that they never knew existed! Like an episode of He-Man, or The Greatest American Hero! Find a classic re-run of one of the Osmond Christmas Specials and enjoy that together! Yes, there is much to be appreciated along the portion of our pathway that is behind us now. Lessons to learn and relearn, personal assessments to be made, and most of all, an opportunity to be truly thankful for all the blessings and experiences that life has brought us up until now.
National Retro Day was actually pioneered and carried to fruition by a good friend of mine and all around amazing guy, Robert DuRan, from San Antonio, Texas. I've never seen someone in a long time work so tirelessly and relentlessly to make this happen, and now it is carved in stone till time immemorial. So let's not let Robert's efforts and passions go to waste! Throw together a makeshift retro shindig tonight and party like it's 19 friggin' 99!
Ah, and of course retro isn't retro at all without the music of the greatest decade to ever occur! Take a few minutes to browse the archives of the most amazing 80s retro show that ever aired on the interwebs: The 80s Rewind Show. For 5 years straight I was a regular fan boy of this every Friday three hour show, featuring the wonderful DJ skills of James Allen and his gorgeous researcher, Princess Pickles! He has archived many of the episodes on SoundCloud. Take a listen! https://www.mixcloud.com/80srewind/
If you're interested in the details of the holiday itself, check out the National Holiday Calendar website and read all about it and show my man Robert DuRan some love: https://nationaldaycalendar.com/2018/02/26/february-27-2018-national-retro-day-national-pancake-day-ihop-national-strawberry-day-national-polar-bear-day-spay-day-usa-national-kahlua-day/
Happy Retro-ing! Let me know in the comments some of your fav memories from back in the day (which was a Tuesday)!
I was just talking to my grandson (who loves super heroes) about He-man... of course he had no idea who it was, but once I described him he was very interested!
