The Road Less Traveled - Perhaps for a Good Reason

Returning home from my local town this morning, I took the scenic route back. This winds down through the mountains and ends up at the top end of my farm. I had never driven along it before and I doubt that I shall ever again!

If I tell that you that road is little more than a dirt track often cut into the stone of the hills, you might think me mad for having chosen it. However, all the roads here are dirt tracks and none without problems.

Halfway down the hill I regretted my choice, as there were many more potholes than the other route and lots of random rocks blocking the path. Navigating these, my car got stuck on a large rock underneath the axle and would go neither forwards nor back. I was simply stuck.

Fortunately, within minutes, a kind couple appeared going up the hill by motorbike and after a lot of effort pushed me out of the rut and off the stone.

Grateful and determined to never take the route again, I was reminded of a poem by Robert Frost "The Road Not Taken"

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
