At school, a master once gave us a talk about overcoming adversity. On reflection, the title of his speech was somewhat perculiar, as it was actually "how to survive being taken hostage", with the aim of teaching us how to remain mentally strong.
He had not, I believe, ever been taken hostage, nor did he provide us with any practical techniques. He simply sat at a grand piano on the stage and played a Chopin Nocturne. Imagining this, or some other beautiful music of our choice, he assured us, would keep us sane in times of trouble and get us through the situation.
This all seems rather old fashioned now and terribly British. However, when confronted with difficult times in life, I have often come back to this talk and as my choice of beautiful music is also a Chopin Nocturne, this is what I do. I listen quietly to the music and let its beauty transcended me to into a better frame of mind.
I would like to share the following with you:
Chopin Nocturne - No 8 in D Flat Major Op 27-2 Played by Vladimir Ashkenazy.
I hope you like it!
