I have been active at the website Quora as of recently, and decided to share an answer of mine which is receiving the most attention.
Here was the question:
Is being blind worse than being dead?
Here was my reply:
Of course not! Close your eyes. You can use your ears to hear the traffic outside, the noises around you, the voices of people speaking to you, you can listen to lectures, you can listen to Mozart! In other words, your ears could still aid you in understanding. You could still understand information, and your mental intake wouldn’t have to be radically different. It might even be better! How many unnecessary things are our eyes drawn to daily? You could learn Braille, and still enjoy a rich mental life of understanding, sanity, and inner peace. Think of it; you could even do mathematics if you wanted to. If a person is dead, how can they enjoy the benefits of any of the senses? Life is much more than sight. Some people who have perfect eyesight are miserable! Despite the health of their eyes, they really don’t see nor understand much. They are the living dead. A blind person could be far more alive than a person who can actually see. Have you ever seen Stevie Wonder without a smile on his face? There is more joy in that man’s soul than 10 average people who have healthy eyes. Being spiritually dead while you’re physically alive is worse than possessing all the faculties in unhappiness.
