So my hair has been blue for a few years, and I am finally ready to switch it up a little! I decided that I wanted dreads. Nervous to dread my own hair, I wanted to do synthetic so I could take them out if I didn't like them without having to cut my hair off. I watched a ton of videos and various blogs. I looked at a variety of pre-made dreads on etsy and other platforms. I couldn't find the right blue or color combinations that I wanted, so I decided to take on making them myself. It was a bigger project than I expected, nevertheless I am SUPER happy with they way they turned out!
I have done a lot of natural dreads on friends who gave me the honor of backcombing their heads for hours on end! It's basically the same process, just with synthetic hair. I decided to order my synthetic hair from doctor locks after finding her videos the most educational & it was exactly what I needed. I felt pretty confident that the results were going to be just as I wanted. It took me an entire weekend to make them, as the backcombing and sealing. can take a little while.
You really only need a couple things to create them. Along with the kanekalon hair I ordered, I picked up a metal backcombing comb, and a spool of elastic thread.
There are a lot of ways to anchor down the hair so you can backcomb. Some people were even using their toes! I used some clamps I had in the shed and a couple of boards.
I combed and combed until I could not comb anymore! Then I woke up and started coming again!
Once I had them backcombed, I sealed the hair with steam from my iron for a nice solid dread!
Once I had about 50 or so I felt like I had enough for an entire head of locks so I started putting them in by breading and wrapping my hair around them and then using the elastic thread to tie them.
Took a little while to braid them all in, but worth every second! I love them!
That looks like quite a project! They turned out great.
It really was! Thanks so much!
Im going bald so thats not an option for me. Ha!
lol... you can stitch them to a hat!
Haha! Just like a tourist in Jamaica!
hahahaha!! exactly!!

Love your dreads! Miss my dreads T_____T
Thank you! They are really magical!
The color change adds a nice dynamic. I like the idea of synthetic dreds. Thanks for filling my head full of ideas. I had many colors of hair even the blue you are rocking. I found it most interesting the feedback I got was all very positive. Have not had color in the hair for a few years now. Hmm 🤔
Well it doesn't take a lot of hair to attach synthetic dreads! You can also do it in mostly natural color with maybe a couple fun ones! You should totally do it! Great art! I look forward to following you!
Cool my hair is to my shoulders now growing for year and a half. I like the idea of dreds but my hair is so thin this sounds like a cool way to change it up. Thanks glad you enjoy my art.
