Hello dear Steemit friends, today I will tell you something about my hobby. That is also my summer job. During the summer, when I'm not studying in Zagreb, I work like a firefighter in Dalmacija. Except I'm earning money, I enjoy being firefighter.
Why Dalmatia over the summer needs a lot of firefighters?
Dalmatia is located in the south od Croatia. In Dalmatia tourism is the most developed branch of the economy so there are many tourists from June to October.
This is map of Dalmatia
So, I will give you two reasons why there is so much fire:
- People – We are the main cause. You might be suprised when I tell you that people are guilty for most fires in the world. People are just ignorant. Fire mostly occurs when people use improperly flammable things like lighters, benzine, different flammable gases and more things.
- Forest and temperature – Dalmatia is specific because it has many pine forest and temperatures over the summer are about 40 degrees Celsius. At such temperatures this forest is extremely easy to ignite.
This is the map of Croatia, red, yellow and purple color explain where fire can appear in easiest way
So now I will show you the biggest fire from the last year, in that fire, the fire threatened to city of Split. The fire started on July 17 and had been shut down on July 25.
Over 300 firefighters took part in the fire and the army also came to help. Weather conditions were bad and firefighters had more difficult job because the wind was blowing heavily (in Croatia we call that wind „bura“, it can blow over 150 km/h). It was burned over 4,500 hectares.
Here you can see a video and some pictures from that fire:
Here you can see how much it burned though it's not all
Where do I work?
I work in a small village called Perković. There are twelwe full-time employees over the summer. We work in shifts every other day twelwe hours but we work as needed when fire occurs. We have three fire trucks, you can see them on picture below:
We go out on fires that are in circle of 40 miles. How the equipped firefighter looks?
- Of course, first is firefighter suit that is resistant to about 600 degrees Celsius
- Fire helmet that protect your head from any impact
- Fire brigade boots that are also ready to withstand certain heat
- Firefighting gloves that protect your hands from heat stroke
- Undermines that protect you from inhaling toxic fumes
- Glasses that protect your eyes from fire or other toxic things
Firefighters still carry at least 20 liters of water with them in the fire so the weight of firefighter equipment reaches up to 50 kilograms.
Here you can see me doing my job 😃
So, this was what I wanted to show you. When we get some alarm on some small fires I carry a Go Pro camera with me. So below this post you can see some videos I've recorded from smaller fires.
Thank you for reading this and watching videos, I hope that you liked that. If you do, I will keep writing about this. 😁
With the climate change, we see so many fires, hurricanes, tornadoes during summers, and extreme winter events also (like snow in places where it rarely snows).
Very well written post!
Thanks for being my follower!
Yeah, weather is changing and that is not normal.
Thank you! :)
