I write with great concern and anxiety about what will come in the next few days in Venezuela. The government has recently announced a series of measures, which, according to some experts, will not recover the nation economically but will continue to plunge it into the swamp of hyperinflation and scarcity. Venezuela slowly walks towards a chasm of great proportions, if it is no longer in it. With a currency anchored to the Petro (which is not a cryptomoneda, although the government says otherwise) they hope to recover the productive apparatus, destroyed by more than 18 years of a meaningless "revolution" without a human face since poverty has increased at critical levels. With a mediocre and permissive opposition, which has failed to fulfill its role of oversight in the actions of the government, either by responding to obscure interests (power quotas, money) or by being under the yoke of control of the security organs .
Every day, for any Venezuelan, is the hard battle to get food at an affordable price, which increases at an insane rate, which has led to malnutrition, anemia and extreme thinness in the vast majority of citizens. In health, we are faced with the rebound of diseases that have returned since their eradication practice, such as poliomyelitis, tuberculosis, yellow fever. The basic services of electricity, water, telephony, gas, walk through a deficiency scenario due to the lack of maintenance of the equipment that provides them. The public transport increasingly scarce since, the spare parts have become incomprables due to its high cost. We are witnessing, as people flee this situation crossing the border, in the largest exodus that the continent has ever experienced. And all this is just brushstrokes of a reality that devours the will of the Venezuelan.
In my country there is a saying which is the following: "We were many and the grandmother gave birth". On the afternoon of yesterday, August 21, one of the strongest earthquakes of this century was felt, with a magnitude of 7 (although some differ in this) on the Richter scale. Cracked houses, collapsed buildings, parked cars that moved alone by the force of seismic waves, poles of light falling or swaying like palm trees. They were seconds of a lot of tension and confusion about whether more replicas would come or the worst had already happened. Thank God there were no fatal victims to regret.
After passing this moment of great tension, I was very involved in the idea of what would have happened if the magnitude of the earthquake had been greater or had lasted longer? As we would have done to face a situation of destruction and tragedy in a country where there are no medicines, food is scarce and mobile phone services do not work properly? This concern turned into rage because, we Venezuelans ourselves have done something, or stopped doing, so that this situation has reached what it is now. When will we realize that we have to start thinking about saving the country, instead of saving my own interest? When we stop thinking about false messiahs that promise populist solutions and we will begin to work with our mind focused on making it better every day, without having to wait for the government's alms (CLAP food boxes, national identity card, political party card) ? Will it be necessary that a tragedy will be our understanding so we can think more about how to get out of this tragedy of almost 20 years?
For now, this earthquake has already happened. Hopefully, it has moved the hearts and minds of each Venezuelan to do what we have to do, to straighten this country and resolve our tragedy, without expecting foreign interventions.
