Better to be prepared than not. We always plan for the worst and if it doesn't happen, it's a bonus. We often buy things extra because we know that they will get used eventually.

Exactly. Smart prepping is buying extra and rotating through stock as you use it. It's not buying 3 years worth of MRE's. It's having a pantry stocked with canned salmon, coconut milk, coffee, tea and things like peanut butter.
Fat is the food group you have to plan to prepare for. Carbs are easy.
