Hello all, so if you've read any of my previous posts on Steemit, then you may know that I currently work for Clarks shoe shop. The timing of me writing this post isn't all that great however, as I only have three shifts left before I leave for University. Overall I'd say that I've enjoyed my time at Clarks, and after working there for a year would definitely recommend it for someone who is looking for a Saturday job or just to earn a little extra each month. I'm going to let you in on a few secrets on what it's like to be an employee, covering the positives and the negatives of the job and basically to give you a bit of an insight as to what goes on behind the scenes.
Let's start the pros:
-- Good pay: Although our pay is minimum wage, it is a lot higher than many other wages that some of my friends earn. Currently we earn about £7.80 an hour. I don't know off the top of my head what minimum wage is for a young person, but I believe it to be around £6.00.
-- Hours: In my opinion the hours are good, as I usually work a 4 hour shift. For me this is ideal as it's not too long and doesn't take up too much of my Saturday, however i know that some would prefer more.
And the cons:
-- We only get breaks if we work 6 hours or more. I don't know if the same rule applies to other jobs, as this is the only place that I have worked for. Personally I think this is a bit harsh as running up and down stairs, carrying boxes is tiring work.
-- It gets very hot. During the back to school period where there are lots of children in the kid's department, it can get very hot. I often find myself sweating and having to wear as few layers as possible.
-- You have to deal with smelly feet. I swear, I think some kids just don't clean their feet or their socks. Whilst most of the time it's bearable, you get some cases where... well, you can imagine.
