Nutritional Value of an Orange Banana Pineapple Smoothie

in #life6 years ago

Smoothies bring in millions of dollars annually for the smoothie industry, according to an article by Kamika Dunlap of the Graduate School of Journalism at Berkeley University. Many people view smoothies as symbols of health. An orange, pineapple and banana smoothie provides you with important vitamins and minerals.

ORANGE JUICE

Orange juice is a primary ingredient in an orange, pineapple and banana smoothie. A smoothie needs a liquid ingredient to blend properly. Use one cup of pure orange juice -- not an orange drink -- to make this smoothie. Orange juice contains several important vitamins and minerals, significantly more than an orange drink. For example, one cup of orange juice has around 84 milligrams of vitamin C, compared to only 37 milligrams in an orange drink. Orange juice also has 443 milligrams of the mineral potassium, 27 milligrams of calcium and 105 international units of vitamin A.

PINEAPPLE

Pineapple smoothies include an entire can of pineapple chunks. Select a 15-ounce can packed in pineapple juice and not sugary syrup. A 15-ounce can contains around 425 grams of pineapple, which is full of vitamins and minerals. Fifteen ounces of pineapple chunks has 425 milligrams of the minerals potassium and 38 milligrams of calcium. It is also full of vitamins, including 128 international units of vitamin A, 76 micrograms of beta carotene and 47 micrograms of folate.

BANANA

In addition to a can of pineapple and a cup of orange juice, an orange, pineapple and banana smoothie includes a whole banana. Bananas are full of nutrients as well. Like pineapple and orange juice, bananas are rich in vitamin A. A medium-sized banana has 76 international units of vitamin A. It is also has 24 micrograms of the vitamin folate. Bananas are rich in minerals too, including 422 milligrams potassium, 32 milligrams of magnesium and 26 milligrams of phosphorus. If you use a small or large banana, your smoothie will have slightly lesser or greater amounts of nutrients.

ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS

Orange, pineapple and banana smoothies also include ice, which does not change the nutritional value. Variations of the smoothie may include a sweeteners like honey that add a significant amount of sugar. Also, smoothies may be non-dairy or include products like milk or frozen yogurt. Dairy products in a smoothie may make it taste creamier and change the consistency. Frozen yogurt or milk from a non-dairy source -- such as rice, soy or coconut -- and lemon sorbet are alternatives that vegans and people with a lactose intolerance may use to acheive a dairy-like texture.
