Oaxaca City is located in a southern state of Mexico called Oaxaca and it is the capital and the largest city of the state. It takes about 6 hours to get there from Mexico City on a bus at a cost of 350MXN(About $17USD).
Buses in Mexico are cheap and convenient once you get the hang of it.
The streets are lined with colorful colonial-era buildings which gives it a distinctive look that you find in many old Mexican cities.
There are also many art scattered around the city. You can just spend a whole day looking at art.
In the center of the city is the Plaza de la Constitución, or Zócalo. The area is surrounded by restaurants and cafe and there are always people hanging out here. This is where one of the major attraction of the city, Oaxaca Cathedral is located. The Oaxaca Cathedral is free to enter and the attention to detail of both the inside and outside of the cathedral is amazing to see.
Another famous Church in the city is the Santo Domingo de Guzmán Church. This church is located about 10min walk from the Oaxaca Cathedral and I liked how there are some agave planted around it. Agave is the main ingredient for the alcoholic drink Mezcal which is mainly produced in the state of Oaxaca.
Third famous Church in the city is the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad which is about another 10 min walk from Santo Domingo. Its crazy to me that there are three major Churches with such an amazing architecture so close to each other. It shows how much influence Catholicism had on this city.
