One of the things I did lately to pass time was reading Big Nate. It’s funny, relatable and it has interesting stories that make it an entertaining read. Stories like Nate’s experience at school are relatable to me and anyone else who has been to school. There are words and visuals in the book that illustrate what Nate is thinking and feeling.😃
Big Nate started off as comic strips and as it gained readers and popularity, an 8 book series, as of this being written, was published. I was able to read the first 3 books which were “Big Nate, In Class By Himself, Strikes Again and On A Roll.
After Big Nate woke up from a scary dream of being called at school, he got ready for school while dealing with his annoying sister . He suddenly thought if they had an upcoming test. He immediately looked over to his smart friend Francis and saw him reading a social studies book. Panicky Nate, thinking that there was a test for social studies, began of thinking ways to avoid the test. But after a while, he was relieved to know that there was actually no test.
He later got a fortune from a fortune cookie which was given by his friend that said “Today you will surpass all others”. Nate wanted to believe it was true and was so excited for the fortune to become a reality.
He thought of the possible ways he would surpass all others. But after receiving multiple detention slips, and no sign yet of surpassing all others, he was told by the detention teacher that he had gotten the most detention slips in a single day out of the whole school. Nate was so happy that he surpassed all others by getting the most slips in a single day! 😂
It starts off when Nate got humiliated for mistakenly taking a baby picture to his crush Jenny but it was actually Gina’s who was one of the smartest students in class. Both Nate and Gina disliked each other, but when there was a group project to write about Ben Franklin, which was to be done by pairs, the teacher Ms Godfrey decided to pick randomly and Nate ended up pairing up with Gina even though they said that they disliked to be groupmates.
While having to deal with Randy who was a bully, Nate was assigned to be one of the fleece ball captains, so he had to pick team members and had to choose a name for the team. However, due to being tardy to the fleece ball captains meetings, Nate was teamed up with Gina and his other friends. And they ended with a name Kuddle Kittens which was chosen by Gina.
Since Nate and Gina were group mates for the project, Gina decided to visit Nate to check on what he had done. Nate decided to write comics to talk about Ben Franklin, but Gina disliked it because it might give her a low grade, and it would ruin her A plus average. So both of them just agreed to use Gina’s work and put both of their names on it.
When it was time to submit the project, apparently Gina used pictures online and library books. But the rule was to create your own visuals for the project. So they would get a failing grade for that . Fortunately, Nate brought the comics he made, which the teacher liked very much, saved the day and would most likely get a high grade!
Soon, it was time for the fleece ball game! While playing, Nate’s foot got injured and he was unable to play. So Gina was chosen to replace him. Nate was surprised because he knew that Gina would miss the ball and the team would most likely lose because of her. But just because of a homerun, which Gina was able to do, the Kuddle Kittens won! In the end, Both Nate and Gina were able to save each other’s day.🏅
It begins with Nate in detention because he was mistakenly accused of intentionally making his friend Arthur fall of a ladder while they were painting. Nate thought of Arthur as Mr Perfect which means he didn’t seem to get into trouble and he did well in everything. Because of the detention, he rode his skateboard to catch up with the Timber scout meeting.
Unfortunately, he was skating so fast that he almost bumped into someone with a dog, but he fell because he caught the string leash of the dog. He fell on the ground and his skateboard fell to the water. So he had to walk to the timber scout meeting and he ended up missing it. So his friends ended up telling him what happened, and they said that there was a contest of who could sell the most warm fuzzies.
Warm fuzzies were wall hangings with pictures and some words on them. There were three prizes for the top 3. Nate was really excited to participate because the first prize was a skateboard. However it wasn’t going to be easy because Arthur was going to participate in it as well.
On the first day of selling, Nate was able to sell 5, and he later on discovers that Arthur sold 20. Nate was surprised! So he decided to work harder and sell the warm fuzzies. As time went on, Nate thought of another way to be able to sell more fuzzies. While he was trying to sell to her sister, she gave Nate the idea of buying the warm fuzzies himself.
So Nate decided to work for money so that he could have the money to buy them. Although he was earning money, it wasn’t enough. So he decided to sell his comics, but it wasn’t quite profitable. Fortunately while reading through a comic book price guide, it listed the prices of the comic books and one of them were Bubble Boy which he had and it was priced at 💰$1000. Because of that he was able to buy a lot of warm fuzzies.
In the end, when it was time to announce the winners, Nate and Arthur tied because both of them sold 58 warm fuzzies. To decide on the winner, they tossed a coin and luckily the coin landed on heads, so Nate got the skateboard he wanted so much! 🏆
Even though all these are just pictures and words on a book, as I kept reading, it felt like a real movie that is happening in my brain and that made so fun and exciting to read Big Nate! 😄
