Where do you draw the line when it comes to medication? The one medicine I really try to avoid is antibiotics. That’s why I found me a GP who is “anti” antibiotic! 😁✌🏻 Let’s clear the air. I’m not stupid. I will take medicine if I have to. I just try to avoid it the best I can.
I think I became very aware of the meds we took and the ingredients of the food we eat after my 2 older children were diagnosed with asthma when they were toddlers. I tried my best to avoid msg, food colouring and western medicine.
The last time I took any form of medication was in November 2015. And that was only because I had dengue fever! Dengue fever. The main symptoms are fever, body ache and skin rash and the first sign is fever. Guess what? I didn’t have a fever nor skin rash, only body ache. Yet the blood test confirmed dengue fever. Every time I went to the hospital for a blood test the nurses would ask me about my fever and would be shocked to find out I didn’t have one 🤨
I am very grateful that I only had to take panadol (paracetamol) and go back to the hospital every other day for blood tests. I think most Asians would know that the natural remedy for dengue is papaya leaf juice. Dengue patients usually don’t do anything but rest while family and friends do everything for them including pounding the papaya leaves and squeezing the juice for them. Me, being Ms DIY, did it all myself and even took pictures and a video! 😅 (I am known to do things different from the norm) 😁
To cut a long story short as soon as my platelet count went up I didn’t go back to the hospital for one last blood test. As far as I know once the platelet count goes up you’re fine. And I wasn’t prepared to pay for another blood test! There is no known cure for dengue and there’s nothing doctors can do about it so I don’t understand why people get themselves hospitalised. Something to think about 🤔
Anyway, the original point of my post is do we really need to take medicine for every little ailment? Over here in Malaysia everyone sees the doctor for a cough or a cold or something like that and are given 2-4 types of medicine. And the doctors here love prescribing antibiotics for everything! In the UK they just stay at home and rest.
My two boys and I don’t take meds for cough, cold, headache, or fever unless absolutely necessary. My first choice would be natural remedies like salt water, honey lemon drink, or herbs. And now we drink homemade kombucha (a probiotic drink)! I really believe all these precautions have strengthened our immunity. We haven’t been to the doctor’s in ages and I’ve saved a ton of $$$! 😁
My parents, however, take painkillers for the slightest things. It really freaks me out! My mum would take a panadol if she feels a headache coming. I don’t know. Maybe at their age they’re more sensitive to the pain. But the thought and sight of them popping pills like that is worrying.
I must admit there is a downside to this (for me at least). The topic came to mind when my parents who live with me were down with diarrhoea and vomiting yesterday and I was lost! I honestly didn’t know what to do! Thank God I have sisters here to help! They are like walking-pharmacies! Now I know what to do 😅
meds for diarrhoea, salted porridge and 100plus to rehydrate
I guess you’ve just got to know your body. No one way is right for everyone. What works for us might not work for you. But there are exceptional cases. I feel very sad for those who suffer from chronic pain and depression. They really have no choice. Medicine actually keep them alive.
I try my best to avoid medicine as well but when it goes on for too long I've got no choice but to speed things up with Mr antibiotic :P
Same here. Like mother like son 😊

I think the answer is weigh the risk to benefit ratio.
Natural remedies also have consequences. That's important to realize.
Yes, I agree. But I think salt water, honey and lemon are quite safe 😉
