It amazes me that people think just because I've got power back at my house that everything is all right. It's not. My home has severe roof damage. Water came in and all of the insulation is wet and heavy, which is causing the ceiling in my bathroom to sag.
I'd spent nearly 2 days without power and all the food in the fridge and the deep freezer had to be thrown out because the seals weren't good. Everything thawed.
Time to make breakfast
And of course, without power, there was no air conditioning. In the heat of a Louisiana summer with no breeze, and the filth and debris in the air after a major storm, it was difficult to breathe, much less sleep in the oppressive heat and humidity.
Despite it all, we're still some of the lucky ones
During the storm, there was a tornado that literally touched down a block from my neighborhood. Homes were completely obliterated. Anything south of me is gone. Major roadways are blocked because of downed trees and utility poles. And now that the storm has passed, we've got a lot of clean up to do.
I don't want my children helping to clean the yard because there is metal and shingles; tacks that could go through a shoe, and all kinds of debris. Just down the road, the foot of a trampoline pierced a tree, then got wrapped around it from the sheer force of the wind.
I am thankful that my family and I are safe, but there is so much to do. I happen to live in an area where we're fed on the same power grid as two hospitals and a local fire department. My kids are sleeping comfortably because we've been able to board up the broken windows and turn on the A/C. That alone is a blessing.
However - the supply chain for groceries and gas is broken. It will probably get worse as people become more desperate. So... yeah. I may be online but everything is not okay.
