One ordinary night on my last cruise onboard the Boudicca around France & Spain, I and my team had an unplanned team dinner over a buffet after showtime. An unusual thing that happens in our team as we have different shifts. Anyways, we have a good laugh on our table and decided to go out on deck, see the moon and then went for a drink.
An ordinary night turns to a meaningful and eventful evening for me. We went out on deck and enjoy the magnificent beauty of the moon giving colours to the evening skies full of stars. Glazing at them makes me appreciate more the creations of God and thought I am so lucky and I should be so thankful not just for tonight but for all the amazing things He have had and is giving me. I stopped for a moment contemplating, pondering, sending thoughts to people who would give anything and everything just to have this kind of life I am living. Bless them.
The bar closes and there Sophie, Adam (who just joined the team few days ago) and myself went to the smoking area and we met these lovely group of guests gather round, enjoying the night over a pint of beer and cocktails and a bit of acoustic music. Looking at them old trees enjoying themselves, singing along as one plays his guitar was just beyond happiness. Time pass until just one of them was left to offer us a song from his young years and it did move me and I just have to go back to my cabin and write this and this below:
ANCIENT TREES
Often you will see them ancient trees sat in one corner, wondering, pondering God knows what it could be about. Sometimes they watch you pass by, and you take no notice of them or maybe have noticed them but pretend you didn’t. Sometimes they was waiting to hear someone utter the word Hello. But you are too vain and skimpy to give it to them.
You think these old trees are frail, these old trees has lost their time, they matter less, you see them as a burden, quite a responsibility and deserve less consideration. Hardwork they are.
Your insensitivity make these ancient trees felt like they are left behind, useless and that they matter no more. A feeling that no one would ever want to feel. But little did we know the older the tree is the better wood we reap from it.
When Ancient Trees speak, Hear them! You might be young for now, but you will grow old and will eventually be one of these you call bush. You have the time in the world, time to make a difference, time to be better.
A simple ‘Hello, how are you?’ would mean a world to them and perhaps adds another year of them lives.
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
