World Whisky Day invites everyone to try a dram and celebrate the water of life. Events are taking place all over the globe.

"World Whisky Day is all about making whisky fun and enjoyable. It’s not about being exclusive or prescriptive. You can drink it however you enjoy it (ice, water, mixer – whatever works for you). We want to be all inclusive and that means any kind of whisky/whiskey from anywhere in the world." -Blair Bowman

The earliest records of the distillation of alcohol are in Italy during the 13th century, where alcohol was distilled from wine. The use of distilled alcohol was for medicinal purposes at this time. In the 15th century, whiskey was distilled in Ireland and Scotland where spirit alcohol began to take precedence. The 1400's and 1500's began to see the change of medicinal use by monks into monks providing whisky to family settings for income. Over the next several thousand years, whisky will be perfected and contested by several countries around the world.

Whiskies are complex beverages that contain a wide array of flavouring compounds, upwards of several hundred in cases. The flavouring chemicals include "carbonyl compounds, alcohols, carboxylic acids and their esters, nitrogen- and sulphur-containing compounds, tannins, and other polyphenolic compounds, terpenes, and oxygen-containing, heterocyclic compounds" and esters of fatty acids.

In short, celebrate world whisky day by enjoying a familar whisky drink or venture out and try a new one!
It should be familiar instead of familar.
