The past for who? It depends on which past, which era, if your ancestors were kings in that era or slaves. I don't think life was easier prior to capitalism. Without capitalism there seems no escaping the caste systems.
With capitalism you have the hope of being lucky winning the lottery, or having a good jump shot, or whatever it is that lets you escape.
