The new black hole photo polarized. On the left the real photo, on the right simulations of the powerful jets shooting out from its core
Back in March I posted about my trips to ALMA and in particular the first ever black hole photo that was produced by the Event Horizon Telescope. Now they´ve made an upgrade and have photographed the same photo with polarization showing the effects of the magnetic fields. Take a look at this.
One of the things I learnt from my trips to ALMA was that the first photo ever taken of a black hole was not a finished mission but actually would be an ongoing project for many years to come. Which is why I wasn't too surprised when ALMA came out with an upgraded version of the photo recently showing how it looks in polarized light.
Before and after. With and without polarization
Now, I can't even begin to do justice to how amazing this new photo is and what it means in terms of our discoveries, but I encourage you all to have a look on ALMAs website all about how they did it.
The ALMA control base where they produced the first ever black hole photo
To summarize though the new improved photo shows light in polarization that is a result of the magnetic fields shooting out powerful jets from the core of the black hole. Yet another discovery in ALMAs long list of groundbreaking work.
