My dog and the BARF diet.

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Hello, Steemers!

This post is dedicated to the pets lovers, with information on a diet that few know, but that is currently becoming an important issue for the health of animals.

The first priority for many pet owners is food. There are many brands of dry food for pets that offer different types of presentations according to the needs of the little ones and it is carefully studied to provide all the necessary nutrients. But there is a problem, in many of these foods causes a reaction not favorable to them, this is because dry foods are made mostly of flours with a high amount of starches that not all animals can digest.

BARF is an acronym that stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. It is a completely natural diet, without additions of chemicals or nutritional supplements, which corresponds to give raw food, mostly of animal origin, to pets according to their breed and physiological need, mainly dogs and cats.

Toby, my dog, was rescued from a family that had him completely careless. He suffered from seizures due to severe parasitosis and malnutrition. My wife Carolina is a veterinarian, she treated him on time and after a week Toby stabilized. We decided to adopt him and take care of him in the best way.

Toby did not like dry foods, because it caused skin allergies and a lot of hair loss. In a season, food was scarce in my country and there was no other alternative to feed it. We tried the BARF diet, giving it raw chicken breasts, a piece of raw meat, small grams of cooked carbohydrates and some raw herbs.

The results were AMAZING, the combination of the diet and medication helped Toby overcome seizures and markedly improved his physical condition within 3 months. Toby is now 8 months old, very energetic, naughty and playful.

As a chef, I wanted to try the vacuum cooking method to give him the BARF diet that Toby required. Vacuum cooking or Sous Vide, has the advantage that food does not completely lose its nutritional components by cooking, maximizes its flavor and the storage is safer. It stops being raw, but it is not completely cooked either. Carolina and I dedicated ourselves to doing research and did the calculations to determine the nutritional needs of our dog.

I used my Sous Vide home equipment and packed my dog's portions per day and cooked them at 60 ° C for one hour, then stored them immediately in the fridge. My dog at this moment weighs 10kg and is fed as a medium-breed puppy with high activity. The diet is based on 80% animal protein and 20% on vegetables and herbs. Portion contains: A mixture of meat from chicken, beef and intestines, potatoes, carrots, rice, pumpkin, oat, beet juice, oregano, broccoli and cauliflower. The portions according to the calculations are 700 grams per day, I divide them in two parts, at 8 in the morning and at 8 at night.

I am organizing several projects that I hope that in the future and with the help of Steemit, can be developed. One of them is a micro-company dedicated to the veterinary service and to the personalized production of vacuum-packed BARF foods, using the method I have described.

Warning

I must make it clear that this diet is designed only for my dog and is supervised by my wife who is a veterinarian. I recommend consulting with the veterinarian of your choice first to determine if it is necessary to implement this diet to the daily intake of your pet and to do the corresponding exams to formulate it. Each breed, each form of life, each body has its own need and the criticism of an expert is needed to evaluate it, this will make the results noticeable in a positive way.

Thanks for your comment. The BARF diet has not many sopporting from veterinaryy because is a recent research, but if think about, imagine how the wilds dogs eat? they dont search for a dry food... they hunt... so the pets are still animals with instict and they have to eat like they were in a wild habitat

I have long been a fan of the raw food diet, although finances have often been a block to getting into it long-term.

One thing I also noticed when trying it out on my dogs was that they were not as able to handle raw food as they should have (internally), and I think that a big part of that was their breeding (show dogs). We are breeding natural abilities out of our animals and that is a scary thing to think about.

Is a good point and I can explain it. If you used to feed them with dry food or with some cabrohydrates from very young age, the internal system have to do something for accept those components and digest it. If you try to change dry food to raw food in fast way, the body reject the changes and the results will not be favorable. It has to be with a transtition with the daily ingest for the body of your dog can handle the new diet. Thats why i recomend to go to your veterinary for see how long can be the transition and how to do it, because not all the internal systems works by equals.

You have a very good point. Even giving the dogs an occasional bone can have very messy results, which is a shame because they enjoy them so much.

I think that if (or when) I get another pup, this would be a great time to start it off on raw food.

Have you noticed a big difference in Toby's poop? I've observed that when the dogs do have a good bone mean then their poop (I guess, full of calcium) isn't as smelly, turns white and crumbles rather than the messes we are used to. A bonus benefit. :)

Dogs should ONLY be given raw bones, not cooked bones. This is because the cooked bones produce chips that damage the digestion system causing intestinal bleeding.

In the diet it is very noticeable how the way of pooping for dogs changes. Toby has always given good color, good smell and good firmness except when he has a stomach problem, which is as common as a human.

The advantage of calcium in the diet is for puppies that are constantly growing and along with breastfeeding their mother, they need to meet their demand for calcium. That is why sometimes small raw bones or eggshells are added to give a little calcium that is needed. The intention of giving them big bones is to maintain the health of their jaws.

Wow this is amazing how you are taking care of your dog.
I read about the merits of BARF method for dogs and good to see you doing it.

Thanks for the support, Mavercik. Regards.

That post is great. I didn’t expect to see raw diets and content on Steemit. I have been raw feeding my animals, particularly my dogs for over 5 years. Great to see the BARF diet catching on. Few suggestions, the BARF diet is based on percentages of bone, meat, offal, fruit, vegetables and supplementation. The percentages are there to ensure a dog gets what it needs. Perhaps refer Dr Ian Billinghurst’s (founder of BARF) book as a reference when making your recipe. I look forward to seeing more!

Thanks for the suggestion. I already know about the complete diet using percentage of fruits, bones and offal. But i use a basic concept fo short words. The supplementation is optional, and depends of the requeriment made by the veterinarian. And i did not use a whole diet has said many expert on BARF diet because i slowly cook the food and it ruin the fruits and the cooked bones are dangerous. Im really glad you share with me. :)

Thanks for the reply. Have you considered researching into why the food is scientifically preferred to be raw as opposed to being cooked? Supplementation is used to compensate for inherently deficient modern soil conditions and also to optimise gut health, which would normally have been catered for far more effectively in more primal dog diets.

All you just said is true and im not opossed to that, but remember than choises are individuals and the supplements not always has to be a rule. And i already make a research of the scientific preference of raw food than the cooked few times ago. I choose to cook a little the raw food because i choose to storage it and save my money by the economic issue in my country. But also i give a complete raw food sometimes to my dog for dont lose the habit. :)

Honestly, when I saw the word BARF, I thought there was going to be a punchline at the end of the post - LOL!

I've heard of the raw food diet for dogs, but never really explored it. What an amazing result for Toby! I'm so happy he's doing so well - our dog Sandy is also a rescue, and apparently was in rough shape when he was first found in Puerto Rico (not by us), but he is thriving on the attention from our three kids. Kudos to you and your wife for such a wonderful transformation!

HAHAHAHA I will not do that for free.

Amazing that Sandy was founded in PR, a long story he have to tell us if he can talk. I need to know where you from. Thank you so much for the congrats and the comment.

Yep, I wish he could tell us what he's been through and what he's seen. I'm from New Hampshire, US, and you're very welcome!
