Greek Villagers Rescued Migrants. Now They Are the Ones Suffering.

in #life7 years ago

The whole village is proud of what we did,” said Theano Laoumis, who helps run the To Kyma taverna.

On the taverna’s beach, refugee dinghies had landed in an unceasing stream. “You didn’t know who to save first, there were so many people. But we did save them.
It was only natural. That should bring good publicity, not bad.”
The drop in business has hit Lesbos as Greece has struggled to emerge from a lengthy economic crisis.
Some are bitter that the refugee tide has added to their woes.
Now Greek island of Lesbos suffers migrant influx

That's all you are going to say? That's how you are going to leave this article? Tell us how the island is suffering. What are you claiming the refugees are doing to harm the island's economy? Is it REALLY the refugees that is the problem? Or is it the poor economy that actually making things bad. Some of us are not part of the EU, so we need more explanation of WHY things are as bad as you see them.

Well, just think it like that.
Your house has room and facilities for five people.
Then five more are coming,
and more five, and it appears that the stream is unstoppable
We feel that it is impossible to accept more thousands of migrants.
European borders are closed for them
They are coming from Turkey
They are coming at our coasts
The only thing that we can do is to help them dry them clothes, and to offer some food

From what i've read in the local greek press is that migrants are also stealing and slaughtering live stock.
There have been several uprisings by failed asylum
seekers, they start fires, burnine not just tents, but also property.

Others have had their homes burglerised. There are a lot of incidents that don't make it out to the International press.

I think the writer of this article should edit and add a few examples with supporting links.

For whom it may concern
It is not a secret, it is not even ''the news'',
It happens every day
There are plenty of reports about the problem of illegal immigration in Greece
