I totally hear you on not touching electricity and plumbing. These are not my friends, either.
I actually own a "snake" (a long flexible steel/spring cable with a small wire brush at one end, but I have never accomplished anything useful with it. My best plumbing skill is knowing how to call a plumber.
I hope you get your issues solved, without too much problem. You were definitely trying to do a noble thing...
