You're absolutely right... and it's kind of funny, but I have had so-called "financial experts" tell me that I can earn much more in a "real" job than from being self-employed. But the $12/hr I average working for myself is a "net" number... and remembering all the extra stuff here in your post, I'd have to make $20+ somewhere "out" in order to come out about the same.
