We live busy lives, and ordering food for delivery can be convenient. As we go through our day we can get wrapped up in our to do's and forget small details. These little details, if remembered, could save us unnecessary stress. As a delivery person I know first hand the hassles anyone one of these details, when missed, can bring about for both customer and delivery person. Here's some food for thought for the next time you order food for delivery.

Food Ordering Etiquette

1) CALLING:

A: Be Patient, If asked to hold, immediately hanging up and calling back will probably put you at the bottom of the list. If you do it enough times you might be put on"their" list. Also remember that your asking strangers to make you food, therefore being polite is a wise choice.

B: If you are ordering from a noisy place, find a quiet spot.

C: If you are ordering for a group, make a list of what you want before calling, or at least take a peek at the menu before calling.

D: Know your phone number and please make sure it's working. This sounds silly, but it's not uncommon for a customer to have to take a moment to remember their phone number, search for, or ask someone what their number is. Certain personalities naturally face this problem more then others. When this happens I usually smile, and make a conscience effort to be patient. Though there are times when other costumers are staring at me hoping I wasn't as patient.

E: If possible use a phone number that works and you'd be able to answer if the driver calls.

F: Have your address in mind, and be as specific as necessary. 1st floor-Backdoor Apt number?/buzzer number. Think idiot proof. :)

G: If you are paying with credit card or only have large bills let the person taking the order know.

H: If you are ordering for someone else please let them know, or let the order taker know so they can warn the driver. The receiver might reject your order.

I: If using an App, make sure your info is current.

2) RECEIVING YOUR ORDER:

A: Consider the time quoted as a "guesstimate". Good delivery places will quote slightly higher delivery time just in case something goes wrong. The theory is that it's better to over deliver then under. This being said you might want to reconsider starting activities you would hate interrupted by an early delivery, like showers or even the occasional quickie. Not sure what it is about ordering food they makes couples want to get it on before the food arrives.

B: Consider what you are wearing. If you don't want the delivery person to see what your wearing or aren't wearing then you should act promptly. Guys it's almost never cool to answer your door in tighty whities or anything less.

C: Keep your phone near by, powered on, and with the ringer turned on.

D: When possible make sure your house has an address number where it's visible. Maybe a buzzer number or an identifier next to your buzzer. I've delivered to houses where not a single house in the neighborhood had house numbers. Many times after a house is painted or had work done on it, the house number was never replaced.

E: If it's getting dark turn your outside lights on. If you expect the delivery person to walk into your hallway and or upstairs turn those lights on also. Don't forget in most states if a person gets hurt on your property they might be able to sue you.

F: Consider the pathway to your door.

G: Consider the weather. If it's raining or snowing please don't leave the driver outside while you search for exact change.

3) Upon arrival:**

A: The arrival of your delivery is not the proper time to train your dog on expected behavior.

B: If your delivery arrives and you are not home, be honest about the time you need to arrive home. The driver might have another deliver. Many times when this happens my next deliver is near by. I could easily deliver, and come back within a short time frame.

C: Delivery people are not uber. It is unwise to jump into an unsuspecting deliver person's car expecting them to bring you somewhere.

D: If your children are handling the transaction for you, teach them to fill out a credit card slip. If you plan on tipping explain the process to them. In a few occasions I've seen youngsters collect the change and pocket the tip, even while the parent was clearly telling them how much to tip from the adjacent room. The results were amusing.

A driver once shared the story of a young man, who on several occasions blatantly ignored his mom's demands to tip a certain amount. His mom would yell to him the amount to tip, and He would instead pocket the tip. So this delivery person having delivered couple of times before. Called the house after handing the young man his change. When the parent answered. He Explained that he did not feel comfortable accepting the change of 35 cents without first verifying it was their parents intent to allow him to keep it and that if it was not their intent he would gladly return their change to them. The mom was under the understanding that she gave him a few dollars unaware the boy was keeping it. The she urged him to return as shewatched the boy hand over the tip. "If looks could kill", he told me with a grin. The parent had a stern talk with the youngster and the habit ended that night lol.

E: If a mistake was made on your order, a patient or kind response will increase the chances of prompt correction, and may include an unexpected bonus.

F: Please be considerate. Don't shut your hallway or porch lights off as the delivery person is walking down your stairs.

G: Tipping is not mandatory, but it is wise and kind. Delivery people make notes of the addresses that don't believe in tipping, and they will go out of their way for a customer who they remember as being generous.

Not all delivery places are the same. I wish good customer service was something you could download into people. Yet people are special. As a person that earns his living off gratuity, I find it especially distasteful when I encounter a fellow serviceman with poor people skills. I try to show the same generosity towards others that I'm blessed to receive. Yet distasteful people make it challenging.

Thank you for sharing in my etiquette post. I hope you found value in it. I wish you success in your endeavors.
God Bless :)
