I hated running.
The thought of running would bring me to disgust.
But as I age, I can't eat as much as before without instant weight gain. Now even dieting isn't enough to keep me in shape.
Hoping to get my health back-on-track,
I tried to run 1 mile.
I put on my Basketball shoes, stretched a little, and set my Fitbit Surge's GPS to on so I could record this rare event
As I began extending my long legs fully and taking full strides, I quickly became tired.
My gait became shorter, my breath faster, until I decided I could not continue any longer. I looked down at my Fitbit, thinking to myself, "Surely I've run at least one mile." My heart sunk
... 0.61 miles ...
... and I was beat, dead, pouring sweat, wheezing, and swearing. I knew that something had to change.
Fast forward 3 months.
I can easily run over 2 miles at close to 9 minute miles (this was in the rain):
In fact, I've been able to progress so far by running 2-4 times per week, that this week I've decided to run every morning before work. The run above was from my house to the local middle-school track where I ran 4 laps, and then ran home.
Sure, my legs are sore, I'm hungry, and I want a beer tonight, but the constant battle against my previous time has started to motivate me!
It doesn't hurt that I'm seeing my body change. I can see some semblance of my ab muscles through the fluffy padding built by beer over the last decade. Maybe one day soon, I'll even share a pic.
This is my favorite part about running; the absolutely incredible rate of calorie burn while running. I burn over 15 calories per minute, or about 450 calories per hour.
As I said, I'm going to do it every day this week. I even cooked all my lunches for the week last night, and boiled a dozen eggs for my post-run breakfast.
Here is how my heart rate looked today measured by my fitbit:
My current goal is really better cardio health.
If you are american, the leading causes of death is cardiovascular disease. You are the only one who can change your risk for heart disease, and running is one of the best ways to reduce your risk.
Here is my Strava summary showing my average running distance, time, and frequency so far this year. Its a little lower than actual because I ran just under 10 miles on a treadmill, which Strava doesn't count.
My goal is 8 miles a week, and I hope you all keep me accountable for that!!
Finally, I need to thank the one who got me into running:
My girlfriend, and possibly pet guinea pig, Amanda

Thank you! Adaptable but less and less as we age, highlighting the need to stay active :)
Great job! I have notice eggs work wonders as well for nutritional energy and fat burn. Try getting some type of amino acids in your diet, I think you would benefit greatly!
I love eggs, been eating tons of them this week actually!
Walking, jogging or running is really important to everyone to keep them healthy. If someone doesn't do you can see the iron which is not used for some time it gets rust, similarly the case with us. If we move we are active otherwise dull and dumb.
So true! I love the comparison to rusting
You got me motivated!
Awesome! Its contagious!
Hey buddy, congratulations on this great news! All the best in nailing 8 miles a week!
(thank you for the SBD prize btw!)
