I usually hear stories of people that studied a course chosen by their parents, that they ended up not finding happiness or peace in their career.
Yup, I know plenty of people my parents' age that did that because of their parents.
They are making great money, but work did become a grind for them. It's sad in some way since they didn't seek to excel, but just stayed as "acceptable" practitioners of their profession.
So yeah, it felt like a career of mediocrity.
