A cosmic event not seen in 36 years, a rare "super blood blue moon" will be seen in parts of western North America, Asia, the Middle East and Australia. The event causes great curiosity because it combines three unusual lunar events: an extra-large full moon for being at its closest point to Earth (supermoon), for the second time in the month, next to a total eclipse.
It's a triple astronomical event," said Kelly Beatty, director of Sky and Telescope magazine.
The term "blue moon" refers to the second full moon that occurs in a month, which happens every two years and eight months.
This full moon is also the third in a series of "superlunas," which occur when the moon is close to Earth in its orbit.
This point, called perigee, makes the moon look 14% larger and 30% brighter.
During the eclipse, the moon will glide towards the shadow of the Earth, gradually passing from a white disk of light to orange or red, as sunlight reflects through the atmosphere.
The alignment of the sun, moon and Earth will last one hour and 16 minutes, visible in America before dawn, in the western United States and Canada.
Contrary to solar eclipses, the mole can be seen without protective glasses.
