She loved him so much, he was the carpenter's son, and she was the only daughter of the rich business man. She knew it could never be. Her parents won't hear of it. You see, her parents were rich snobs who felt poor people were far beneath them and mingling with the poor was a taboo. But she kept loving him anyway, she kept meeting him in secret, she kept spending time with him, she couldn't help it. Love is not an emotion you can easily control. As far as she was concerned he was the love of her life and She would keep seeing him as long as she can hide it from her parents
And then she missed her period. She started feeling nauseous and ill.
She knew she was pregnant. She told her lover and he was ready to take responsibility and marry her. Together they went to her parents and told them. Her parents went ballistic, her mother hit her for the first time in her life, she had never seen them that angry before, the blatantly refused to marry her off to the church rat the called him.
They insisted she terminate the pregnancy because they couldn't bear the shame and stigma it will bring to the family's good name. They are a family of wealth and affluence. The told her the wanted the best for her. The wanted her to marry a wealthy man.
She cried And cried and begged them to change their minds, but their minds were made up already.
In Nigeria, in fact Africa as a whole. The rate of abortion is very high.
Lots of parents dont discuss sex with their children and because of this young people often lack knowledge about consequences of unprotected sex such as unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.
This increases the risk of early pregnancy. Because of the stigma and shame that is attached to unintended pregnancy, as a result some had carried out unsafe abortions.
Girls with unwanted pregnancies face lots of discrimination in Africa, asides from being psychologically violated by parents. They are gossiped about and stigmatized by the community and peer group. They are seen as bad examples and because of this, many are pushed to have abortions and die in the process.
Some African parents even help their kids have this abortion just like the parents in the above story, the care more about their good name than the fact they might lose their daughter in the process. They also forget children are gifts from God and the baby to be murdered is their grandchild.
Let's stop the stigmatization of unintended pregnancy.
Let's save the lives of many young girls out there.
Let's stop discriminating the poor
My parents were good practicing Catholics. Of course, they were against sex before marriage, but they also were even more against abortion.
So, when my sisters became teenagers, they told them that if they became pregnant, they should come to them and together they would deal with the problem, without being angry at them.
Am also a catholic. And am Highly against abortion. Wish lots of parents can be like yours. Lots of girls resort to abortion because of the fear of what their parents will do to them
Luckily my now wife and I were bith gainfully employed and already living together the conversation of having a kid out of wedlock was very awkward. I cant imagine what its like for kids 16 - 18 to have that conversation with there parents.
Its not easy, especially in Nigeria
Great topic! It is indeed tragic to learn that in some countries a girl getting pregnant by accident has to suffer so much, while in other parts of the world no one even bats an eye over this. People need to change their mentalities.
Thats right dear. Thanks for dropping by
True, abortion is not our culture, its one of those alien culture adopted into our community. The classism of the rich and the poor is agelong and will continue unless equality is adopted......Thanks for sharing this
What about the country's population
Let's stop the stigmatization!! These are the daily realities of young boys and girls in my hood. Let's stop discriminating the poor. Great piece of work @evelyniroh
Well...when it comes to issues like this, some people might say i have a bent thinking or am crazy....the mentality of the Nigerian society is something of great concern, not only pregnancy...there are a lot of things people do bcox they think its what people (society) pose as right.....not considering what they really think or really want...this is a very nice post and i love the way you wrote it...take my small upvote and resteem as a token of appreciation
@amec says welldone @evelyniroh
Thanks @amec.
People judge someone dt carried the pregnancy but the ones dt removed the pregnancy are seen as better off.
There's not much we can do abt it.
Cos pregnancy is like saying, 'I'm guilty. Here's the evidence'
Thats so true. Thats the more reason girls decide to abort unwanted pregnancies, to rid themselves of the shame and stigma. Its too bad
The last phrase of your comment blew my mind.
Thanks for the contribution. Anyway, you've got a nice AVI and I so much love your handwriting 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Lol...Tankiu
I can't say more or less, but the talk about arbotion can't be invalid. the problem is when people see that thing as just blood rather than a life that deserves existence just like them.
But in a race to enjoy life even more, they won't stop making babies they are not ready to parent and they been not ready would be their only terminating factor.
My generation wants to enjoy sex out of wedlock but no one wants to take the responsibility of parenthood.
The probe with Africa and Nigeria especially is not minding ones business.
So if an unmarried lady is pregnant, what's another man biz with that?
Anyone would have fallen for that.
A popular pigin quote says
Thanks @evelyniroh for this post.
I remember in my neighbourhood,a woman beat up her child, forcefully made her abort the child cause of reputation, the guy was their gateman. Most parents value their rep more than their children self. Most cases are teenage pregnancy which occur daily, its better they have it(the unborn child),go through that pain or shame so that next time, they will know that its wrong. Abortion is never the best solution,Cause you aborting it for them, is telling them that next time they should have sex and abort again.
The best solution is sex education, parents need to educate their children more about sex, the earlier the better for them cause i don't know why parents hide it and their kids end up messy up cause of wrong info about sex from the wrong people(deceitful men).Charity begins at home

What people dont know is that abortion has lots of effects on the individual. Thanks for dropping by dear.
All I think is needed is more enlightenment through proper education on safe sex. After all prevention they say is better than cure. Telling every sexual active person to abstain is like trying to drive a car with no tires, it just won't work.
So I think we should focus on the one that could work, safe sex education, sex education is almost a taboo here, and once you mention it you are taken to be a sort of a pervert or an alien out to destroy the good virtues of all men. Nice article.
So true. Thanks for dropping by
You are welcome

Its quit unfortunate too many young Africans don't get sex education from there parents/guardians. Even i had to learn from the social media and programs that i attended in my High school days.
Steem is welcome, I follow you
It hurt me so much to see young girls involved themselves in this deadly act.....i call it that because u r taking away an innocent soul and your life is at risk also....many will say, 'i cant bear the shame and insult'. God help us....
@evelyniroh well done
Yea,, unwanted pregnancy even in ancient african culture is a taboo,, but i guess we live in a civilised world today,, so all this should be abolished both in real life and in our minds too
Well, African are africans. They have some social belief that is hinged upon the sanctity of marriage. Hence the stigma when children are gotten outside wedlock.
It requires total orientation, in other to unlearn what is learnt. One which will require time and patience. We given this, the change of the conception will gradually fade and people will understand the need to give love and support, than to stigmatize.
Lovely post dear.
The rate of unwanted pregnancy especially teenage pregnancy is escalating but abortion isn't just a good option.
Great topic and well discussed. Thumbs up!!! @evelyniroh
