I was supposed to babysit Sam today.
My sister and her boyfriend were going to run half a marathon somewhere in Rotterdam and I was charted to look over the little one.
I was looking forward to it. I had not seen him in a while.
Two hours before I had to leave it started to snow.
A lot!
I thought about canceling the appointment but I didn't want to let my sister down.
So I decided to take the risk.
I went to my car and removed all the snow.
I turned on the heating and slowly made my way to Rotterdam.
It was ok. A little bit slippery but nothing major.
Now, I like to believe I'm an ok driver... :)
I get a fine from time to time for speeding (+5km to fast), like anyone else, but I'm not an idiot. I behave.
So I was driving really slow through the snow when I approached a traffic light.
In front of the light was a car.
I must have been going 10 km/h.
I pressed the brakes lightly well ahead but.....I just kept going.
My tires had zero traction.
I tried to pump the brakes but it didn't matter.
I was heading towards the car in the most irritating annoying slow way and there was nothing I could do.
And then I hit another car for the first time in my life ever.
I got out and the first thing I wanted to know if the other guy was ok.
He was a young man. maybe 20, and a bit shook.
We took pictures of the whole thing and then exchanged numbers.
He's coming over tomorrow with his dad to fill in the paperwork.
Obviously, I could not make it to my sister in time so I informed her.
She understood.
Later she informed me that the whole marathon was canceled because the organisation could not guarantee the safety of the runners.
Lol, go figure.
When the snow clears the first I'm going to do is go to the garage and get some winter tires.
I learned my lesson.

I live in snow country, when it is winter time. Something that many people don't know that I think should be taught in drivers ed is how to stop when it is slick out from snow or ice. It won't prevent 100% off accidents but it will prevent the majority of them when you start to slide if you do this.
Throw your car into neutral it will go into neutral from drive or reverse without having to depress a button or pulling it forward (depending on the type of car) and if you are driving a manual then if you go into neutral it slows the spin of your tires and by tapping the breaks (don't slam on them that will cause the slide to get worse) it will bring you to a stop. Since I was shown this trick I haven't had any winter accidents. (Thankfully I had been lucky and they had always just been one car slide off accident type things.)
Great advice! Thanks. I have a manual car. So neutral and tap breaks?
there are benefits to being married to a former racer.
So sorry to hear of the annoying slide into another car. Something similar happened to me a few years ago on 'black ice.' ( ice on asphalt ). However, I must say that I am a bit jealous that you have snow. Here in North Idaho, we do not have real snow yet and I was really hoping for a white Christmas, our first one back to the states in a while.
They expect more snow to fall later today. I'm staying by the fire today. Did you slide too with no way of stopping? I felt pretty helpless...and silly I can tell you that. Learned a good lesson though.
Yes, exactly the same as you, helpless. I realized that there was nothing I could do about it and just accepted. Made impact a lot less in my head - LOL
hope you are fine as well.
Damage on the cars will be solved, pick up some winter tyres and hit the road again
I'm ok thanks!
That sucks @exyle ... I'm also not looking forward to tomorrow when i have to remove a ton of snow from my car... I'll make sure to leave 30min early!
Drive safe!
I hope all will be fine and the man will understand that this all happened due to fog and heavy snowfall. Take care of yourself my friend.
Yay, another Dutchie. Hello from Australia. It has been a while since I have seen snow. Love the pictures.
Hi friends you both are looking wonderful in winter dresses. I can feel the trouble you had face while driving in snow. But you are a very good brother too, who cares his sister so much. Thanks friend good people are very hard to meet in life, stay blessed and healthy friends and enjoy the winter.
Thanks for sharing your story. Life is a series of lessons learned. Never stop learning, never stop growing, and always drive insured! :-)
Driving insured indeed!
Be-careful while driving in snow as the car might skid even when you apply little brake, fortunately you were driving at slow speed which saved both of you.
it's too sad to hear that your car unfortunately slipped due to heavy snow and hit's the car in front of it and i hope that you are bianca are fine, well driving a car in snowfall is always difficult task and their is always a fair chance that car goes out of control, i think we need to avoid driving in snowfall and yes you made a right decision it is the time to buy a new pair of winter's tyres before hitting the road again, Stay blessed my friend and thanks for sharing.
Had the same problem with winter tires. I was waiting till the last day and when it started to snow it was kind of late already. Now I have to wait a bit, because there is a huge queue in my auto service.
Yup same here. I'm just waiting for the snow to clear.
You're okay that is very good news. Other things doesn't matter. In my view point you did a great job:
I thought about canceling the appointment but I didn't want to let my sister down. So I decided to take the risk
This is called Brotherhood / Sisterhood. Love your approach. Stay Blessed dearest @exyle!
Thanks man!
some time suddenly this happend and with heavy snow winter is more and what about bianca in this cool weather and u bbq activities @exyle sir
Haha, the green been off for a while now. I don't mind winter grilling but the weather has not been sunny. Just rainish/cold. Bianca is holding up fine!
yeah u say right but some time grilling in snowy winter making more enjoy like as survivals its a difference experiecne of enjoment of grilling in snowy winter but under a shed or in apartment
Oh, yes, my friend, winter brings many surprises for motorists and now, of course, you need to be careful. And of course, you made the right decision about the winter tire, now you can not do without them. Thank you @exyle and keep us informed!
Same here some heavy snow came down, yes not your fault you tried your best and was careful on the road but the weather is unpredictable @exyle which makes unpredictable things happens btw I got to see your buddies @rea and @ezzy tonight.
I hope you had a good time!
It's a little mistake but great memories. I think you should celebrate this bez this is first time.
Great idea! lol!
you can swipe that off your bucketlist :D
That's a positive way of looking at it :)
Accident happen no matter how cautious we are, the most important nothing major happen to you and the other driver.. thank God.. take care and encourage I am to see you posting despite some minor let down.. :) God bless you..
Similar think happened to me few years ago. I was little bit in shock and felt really bad about the situation. Now looking back it was not a big deal. Most important think is that we learn.
I guess it's no big deal. It happens. I did feel that shock too....strange....must be a general feeling.
OMG maybe take some steem power and buy the self driving tesla...
I think I rather spend 4 months in Brasil :)
Yea winter tires must have :) I have changed them already 3 weeks ago :) Now I don't give a fuck that winter is coming!
Smart move!
What a way to put a damper on the day but it is beautiful isn't it? I was messaging with my husbands cousin this morning from Netherlands (her name is Bianca as well) and she was sharing with me pictures of all the snow there. I'm from Canada so I am totally used to it. Drive safe my friend (although I have no doubt you already do)! :)
Thank you!
I had that ones as wel. Weird experience if you know what's coming and you can not do anything about it. Glad you're okay!
Thank you!
Yeah! It's tricky out there right now, we got a lot of snow here in de Achterhoek aswell, stay safe ❤
Edit,we need wintertires here anyway if shopping in Germany (cheap!) 🤗
An accident in slow motion. That must have been frustrating to see it coming but be unable to do anything. But at least no one was hurt, do that's good.
Very frustrating. But I feel ok about it now. It happens.
Delegate him some Steem Power ;D
LOL!
Sorry to read about this! Yeah, winter driving can get crazy at times! I just picked up a cheap 2002 Honda Accord to get to and from work. It doesn't have the best of tires and of course it snowed the day after picking it up. I was slipping and sliding around the roads. Felt like I was a pinball. I luckily didn't hit anyone but pulling into my drive way I smoked my garbage bin. It was kind of funny though cause the snow on top of the lid blew off it in a dramatic way. Looked way cooler than it should have.
Be safe @exyle!
In some provinces in Canada, it is illegal to drive in the Winter without snow tires.
I'm glad everyone is OK.
Sounds like a good law. I learned my lesson.
Glad you're ok man, thinks could have been a lot worst. At least you can joke about it and learn a valuable lesson :)
@exyle,
There are a lot of car accidents happen in winter due to slippery roads! But today you were really unfortunate! That's why that brake didn't response you on time! Anyway, you are lucky, you got no harm at the end and learnt a lesson! Thanks for sharing it with others! It might be a great lesson to whole community as well!
Cheers~
Sorry to hear about the crash @exyle. Old man winter is here and the roads need to be plowed and salted to keep everyone safe, glad to see everyone is okay and your car was not to badly damaged. Stay safe and take care.
Damnnn I'm sorry to hear about that. I once crashed in the snow as well, sometimes the car just can't handle it anymore.
Nice hat by the way. Hope your day gets better from here!
Thanks, that hat is old. Had it for a long time. Have a great day man!
I can see it looks like a classic. I am a big time New York Yankees fan. They just got a new star player this weekend (Giancarlo Stanton) so the Yankees are poised to have an awesome season next year!
yeah you gotta take ya time in the car in this weather. it was full on this morning i was sliding down hills. glad everyone is safe.
You guys in the lowland countries. You poor souls never know what nature has in store for you. One winter, barely a snow flake, the next ample snow for days. Go figure!
It's always a surprise!
It's time to change the tires to something more appealing to driving in the snowy conditions.
@exyle So glad it was just a little tap and no one hurt.........
OMG are you ok. I face same problem in winter too mainly driving. Ohhh so risky.
Your story is help us for our life.
Thanks for sharing
I one suggest for you when you driving my dear friend @exyle
