My eyes have been bugging me for a while now.
Throughout the day they start to sting more and more.
I also felt that my vision was more getting more blurred.
So today I decided to go see a 'real' optician and not one you find in a generic store for glasses.
I made an appointment for 13:00 in Rotterdam.
I entered the office/store and it was completely empty.
I walked to the counter where I was greeted by a nice lady of around 50.
We exchanged greetings and I explained what the problem was.
She sat me down on a chair with all kinds of bells and whistles attached to it and then proceeded to take measurements of my current glasses.
When she came back she started here measurements where I had to to look through a huge device with interchangeable lenses.
I have done this before in a generic store but her tests where completely different.
I had to read letters on the wall but also look at different colours (green/red) and a circle with lines on them all the while she was changing lenses and I had to say if things looked sharper or not.
It took a long time.
By the end of all this I got the result.
And she said the on thing I did not expect.
She said, you have much better vision then most people!
You just have the wrong lenses!
I nearly fell of my chair!
She explained that some people have more light receptors on the back of the eye and can see more detail.
The baseline is 100%, I have 150%.
I said, but I need glasses to see!
She said, well that doesn't matter. Some don't need glasses and they only have 80%.
Your eyes are fine but your lenses are completely wrong!
She said, both your lenses are off by a quarter but worse you axle is wrong by 30%! (I have no idea...even after she explained it what that means).
Wow! I did not expect any of this.
She promised me that by next week I will have eagle vision with new lenses.
I hope this is all true because I can barely believe it.

that could be actually true, I have a friend that had the same problem, I thought she would say no glasses at all. well, we kinda like you with glasses

Hello friend I'm happy for you that now your vision is back right. Do you think if she told you that you had to do a laser operation? This happened to me, but now I see well but with glasses, but only to read.
My goodness, so you were wearing the wrong lenses, I guess it's a better result, the thing is I was expecting the worse reading about your eyes, but it's always glad to see it was a relief, so how's your vision now?
The same, lenses will be ready next week and will be placed in my current frame.

Good - no surgery required! New lenses will help until you drink excessive beers or play late night video games. Such habits will change with age or children. Be happy!
Yeah I was happy with that as well! Surgery scared me a bit.

It almost always pays to go to the real doctor. They just have the knowledge and technology to make sure you are getting what you need. I remember going to an urgent care for my finger that a friend fell on while playing basketball. The urgent care said it's fractured and I need to be in a splint for a few weeks. Conveniently a doctor friend took a look at it, had it x-rayed and they found there was no fracture and I just needed the splint for a few days until the strain goes away. Glad you're vision isn't as bad as you thought.

In hindsight I would say if it doesn't 'feel' correct there is probably something going on. I know more about the results next week. I'm hoping she is correct.
That's the reason why we should take the pain and visit the right Medical Center anytime we need medical assistance.

Actually you don't have to discard what she has said, she will surely get the befitted lenses for you, she knows what goes wrong on your side.
I learn something from this experience of yours, sometimes we don't really have problems with some certain things but only get the wrong prescription for it. A lot of people are in your shoe today but luckily for us now, thing actually changed for better.
My goodness, what a relief! Now you can rest easy knowing that it's not what you thought. I myself am well overdue for a proper eye exam, and this post has shown me that I better get to it before it's too late.
If this doctor is right I will feel like a fool going to this generic store. A proper eye exam is very wise.
I think the doctor is right, a thorough job was done so you can rest easy. As for a proper eye exam being the wise thing to do, I'm also in agreement there.
I don´t use glasses, gratefully, so I don´t understand much about this matter, but it is very important to always have your lenses with the right graduation.
150% and you still need to use glasses, that´s why our body is full of surprises, and the more we know it the less we understand it.
I didn't need them either when I was 21 :)
Ahaaha, you´re right, my opinion is a little suspicious considering my age.
You always have to go to a real professional. At least you discovered that the problem weren't your eyes. I bet you will experience the world in high definition with the new lenses.

They do? I had no idea. I think you can only buy cheap reading glasses in the street here.

Am happy for you- that is really great news. It is a good thing you went to a real professional and not a generic one. That should serve as a lesson for all those people who use glasses. I think in every medical issue one should get the opinion of 2 to 3 professionals; misdiagnosis is very common and can be fatal in some cases:)
That is crazy! It is always good to go to the experts for advice. I try to get to my optometrist once a year just to make sure everything is squared away. Hopefully the changes to your lenses will do the trick for you!

Personal I feel you've been exposed to rays of uv lights for so long like looking at your bright phone screen, eyes on your PC and so..
I don't like glasses even though I have one, I however prefer to do the routine eye exercises like closing my eyes for sometime after using my phone, rolling my eyes , crying helps too..

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with your new glasses @exyle. It can take a bit of adjustment when you suddenly start seeing in a different way.
I always find my optician appointments quite interesting. Certainly beats going to the dentist! 😊

If you bought your lenses at a generic type store before, your lenses have a greater chance of not being correct. I have had that happen a few times, so now I just go to a proper eye doctor.
Good news! You mentioned several things that I have never heard about.
That means that the stores where they sell lenses are not the best for vision tests, or to make eyeglass formulas, it was better to go to a real specialist because it gave you a good and unexpected news! You must rejoice, many would like to have that view that you have :)

Wow sounds like some intense tests to figure out what was wrong I haven't heard of the colour thing before interesting, well @exyle I hope it works out I know a friend who as done those tests, they promised better vision because of apparently wrong glasses and when they arrived the glasses caused vision to be worse, not only that but there was many other complications afterwords which I wont go all into here, it will be too long lol.
Hmm I'm a bit skeptical. If I were you I would visit an ophthalmologist because they are actual doctors meaning they have to go to med school and then complete their residency and all that.

I hate wearing glasses but they are important to driving or seeing far away. Sometime maybe will get the laser surgery to improve my vision hopefully with no glasses.
