To answer your question about cold storage. for BTC you can generate a random address (https://www.bitaddress.org) and send your BTC there. just make sure you backup the private and public key and never share these. (if you want to be super secure, you generate the address on an offline computer).
my EOS is still on the exchange. Had no time yet to get it off.
The potential is only limited by our imagination. Thank you very much for the advice on cold storage. I simply don't feel comfortable with my coins on an exchange, and not entirely comfortable leaving them in my Coinbase wallet. Much appreciated!
