I'm not a big fan of getting surgeries done but I've had a few in the past year. So few days ago during my annual dental checkup, my dentist informed me that I would need a root canal treatment for a tooth that wasn't in the best possible shape. I wasn't pleased to say the least. But I was happy because the rest of my teeth are in good health.
I've had 4 surgeries in the past year and a couple of them with long periods of recovery. Infact my leg hasn't yet fully recovered from the last surgery in April. Hence I was sceptical about undergoing this one. But it needed to be done.
However, nothing annoys me like the sound of the dentist drill and the accompanying jolts. It's just very different to the pain from a fracture, which I seem to be rather acceptable over this rather disturbing drilling in my mouth. Guess i've watched too many horror flicks.
The sound of the drill makes me a little edgy, but luckily the second half of the session involved use of a quieter drill which made me very comfortable. There's no pain as such as because half my face was numb from two injections of local anaesthesia.
Honestly, I wasn't expecting it to be this easy. Just sit there, get two injections and then look up at the ceiling for about an hour, keep my mouth open and let the specialist work on my tooth. At some point I actually got bored of staring at the wall and closed me eyes. 2 rounds of x-rays in between seemed like a great break from lying down.
But, the sound of the drill is still in my head. You can hear it in the YT video below. I can't seem to shake it off. It's not very pleasant but it's there. Maybe I need to turn up the speaker volume in my room and play some nice beats on loop.
Post treatment I couldn't feel the right side of my face. I tried scratching my beard but the itch wouldn't go away. It tried harder! No luck. It feels weird to touch my face when it's numb. I haven't felt that since my childhood when I had a tooth removed I think.
Later, I drove to my favourite restaurant and nearly spilled my juice there drinking from a straw because my lips were numb and I couldn't feel the seal properly against the straw. It was kinda funny!
So, I waited a good hour or two before I ate my meal and by then the effects of the local anaesthesia started wearing off. Quite an experience!
Now, I have to go back in a week for the rest of the procedure. The pain after treatment is quite bearable. But the awful noise from the drill and the vibrations in my face is what put me off from visiting for a checkup months ago.
When I was admitted for multiple fractures in my leg months ago and the doctor aligned my bones prior to the surgery, I experienced pain momentarily like I've never felt before in my life. But I feel I was mentally calmer in that moment than when I had a drill in my mouth. I guess it's the noise from the drill that's just too annoying. I guess I've said that thrice already.
The timing for this post 1 Billion reasons I hate the dentist (and you probably do to)
couldn't have been any better! :D
What medical procedures do you hate the most and had to sit through it? Let's hear it in the comments below.

I have to get onE soon as well and I’m so scared , a lot of people have told me the pain that it gives and the time of recovery is long . But then again some people can tolerate more pain than others
Dont worry. Ask your dentist to numb the area properly before operating. Should be fine. A pain killer will help post-treatment. :)
Oh man! I have had 2 RCTs and 3 Tooth Extractions (All of them were wisdom teeth) so far. I am short on a lot of wisdom now. ;) Visiting my dentist is like morning walk to me now. He uses some anesthesia spray before actually hitting me with the needle so that I don't feel a thing. Thanks to science & technology - No Pain and Lots Of Gain. :-D
Wish you good health @firepower. Cheers!
Oh damn! That anaesthesia spray is interesting. The needle wasn't too bad but it would help to make it easier for most i'm sure.
LOL! This has happened to me too. Did they cover it with the cap as well? I have been now waiting for the cap for about 10 days after having RCT done coz they don't have the one fitted to my teeth lol.
Tooth related problems are very painful than any other problems. In my past few years i too have have problems related with my teeth but i prevent some foods and it is all right now,and i have never gone through such physically pain yet.And the drill sounds is really very scary and annoying.Meghan sir how are you feeling now?
Feeling better. thanks for asking. :)
Your most welcome sir.
The cap is happening after a week or so. I have to go back for it.
Sergeries have improved so much these days especially this one. Already on my way to a 2nd one xD skipped my session today due to rain, have to get my final filling tomorrow.
oh! good luck with that. Mine's next friday i think.
Learnt that the longer I wait the woooorse it gets. Mine is done, just the cap tomorrow
Drilling in your mouth!! Yep I too hate that :(
The most annoying torture someone would go through! Take care buddy @firepower
@firepower i read somewhere going to" dentist is a vicious circle" hope you get out of it sooner 😉
Oh man.. the sound of the drill is indeed horrible.
Also the urge to close the mouth during the drill is huge.. for it dries up quickly.
I wish you speedy healing
Take care
thank you :)
Haha, I feel exactly the same way... I don't like the smell nor that drilling noise... And guess what, I'm a dental technician :D
oh damn! :D
Yeah! Previous week I went to dentist to pull out my tooth as it started to decay 😂. I never felt a pain like that in my life time 😫
I hope the pain went away soon.
Nowadays there are lot of latest technology using on dental care, so you need not to worry to take surgeries, any how your teeth become well.
How about your leg now, its all easy to walk?
Leg is improving. :) Thanks for asking.
Yesterday we also visited dental to remove my grandfather's tooth I was so scared so I went outside the hospital
hehe..
I hope it went smoothly for your grandfather.
When you are being drilled by a dentist for root canal and you can't wait to get back to your laptop to do a steemit post and get reactions from co-steemians about their experience ;)
hahah! True. I wanted to get this out of my head actually. :D
Root canal? I'm planning to get that done too.
Putting thermometer in mouth to measure the temperature level of fever. I hate that the most!
nowadays you don't can check temps under your arm pit. that's where most docs/nurses in the hospital check. no more in the mouth.
When I was a girl, I was afraid of taking injections, but after marriage i had been hospitalized for three times .i don't like it anymore ,but we are living being and we can 't escape ourself from its grief.God bless you dear, take care.
I know. I don't like it either.
Haha!! I feel exactly what you feel now.
My tooth was started decaying coz of eating more chocolates.
My little sister also love to eat 💚❤chocolate so I gave her company to eat chocolate but the result is so bad but I found it very funny.😀
please check out my post once🤗💙💙
Thanks for sharing your experience with us @firepower sir.
RCT is a better treatment
Hahahahaha......what timing! I just got braces 2 days back. FYI that isn't so bad either 😁.
And after a few months, I might have to get tooth extraction done as well and I'm just dreading that day. Your post brought some relief though 😅
Drilling in your mouth!! Yep I too hate that :(
The most annoying torture someone would go through! Take care buddy @firepower
Thanks dude
Nice post
I am glad to hear about your experience in dental office. Surely it is the hype that has created so much fear among the common people towards dentists. The dentists are seen no less than monsters i guess, “ruthless with so many poky things putting into your mouth”. I can assure you we are just like normal people.
This fear just keeps the people away from the dental offices. However when they actually undergo the dental procedure due to some unavoidable reasons (😖), they realise just like what you observed “IT WAS NOT THAT BAD AFTER ALL.”
P.S. About The Sound of Drill, well that is annoying but that is not a reason to ignore your oral health. Also, there are some Laser cutting drills which don’t humm so much.
I never do hate any of the medical procedure mostly the daycare ones. I know these are not too apprehensive and dangerous as people belive.
In case I have to confess, God forbid, should not happen to anyone. It may be the Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy or related procedures.
Being a dentist I have seen people standing from dental chair or even leaving the clinic when they see syringe of local anesthesia going towards their mouth.
One time I had given LA to a child to get root canal of his front tooth done. After anesthesia he started screaming and crying. He started calling his mother.
When she was accessed to clinic
Child;
"These butchers took my nose and lip."
I took him to the mirror that nothing is wrong. The effects of LOCAL ANESTHESIA takes your all pain but things like these happen too.
Hope you will have a good recovery and for any post operative help you can text me too on Steem.Chat.
