Why All World Maps Are So Wrong?

in #life7 years ago

Making absolutely accurate world maps is mathematically impossible.

Map makers have faced this problem for centuries: It is mathematically impossible to translate the surface of a sphere onto a flat surface without some form of distortion.

In order to solve this problem, mathematicians and cartographers have developed a huge library of representations of the globe, each distorting a certain attribute and preserving others.

For example, the Mercator projection keeps the shape of countries while distorting the size, especially near the north and south pole.

In the end, there's not "true" map projection. Each comes with weak sides, and cartographers make projection decisions based on the particular tasks at hand. But if you are interested in seeing an accurate depiction of the planet, it's best to stick with a globe.

Flat earthers don't have this problem :D

👍🙂

Except if it's flat like some people are still believing to be true :)
...and even try to prove it...

[Seeing is believing!]
